Dans une usine d’armement du géant britannique de la défense BAE Systems dans le nord de l’Angleterre, la fabrique des munitions tourne à plein régime, dopée par la guerre en Ukraine et un horizon géopolitique de plus en plus sombre
«Le monde semble devenir de moins en moins stable», ce qui «suggère que la demande de munitions va augmenter et que ce sera pour nous un scénario durable.» C'est ce qu'a estimé Steve Cardew, responsable du développement commercial pour le groupe BAE Systems, à l’occasion d’une visite de presse de son usine de Washington, près de Newcastle.
A Washington, cela se traduit notamment par une production d’obus de calibre 155 mm qui devrait avoir été multipliée par 8 en 2025 comparé à début 2022, avant le début de la guerre en Ukraine, détaille Steve Cardew auprès de l’AFP.
Dans l’usine où flotte une odeur de soufre, 14 machines et 340 ouvriers s’activent sur 28.000 m2 pour forger, former, traiter et peindre la partie métallique de munitions d’artillerie et de char, et de mortiers de gros calibres.
A observer les blocs de métal rougis à 1100°C manipulés par une gigantesque pince métallique, ou les ouvriers qui polissent avec soin les pièces de centaines de mortiers, on en oublierait presque leur mortel dessein. Les obus vides sont ensuite envoyés sur le site de Glascoed, au pays de Galles, où est ajoutée la formulation explosive.
Le géant britannique, dont les résultats sont attendus lundi, avait annoncé début août un carnet de commandes record à 66,2 milliards de livres et des bénéfices semestriels en progression de 57%, «dans un environnement de menace mondiale élevée» qui se traduit par une hausse des dépenses militaires des Etats.

«Ce que nous avons vu cette année est sans précédent, avec plus de 430 millions (de livres sterling) de commandes supplémentaires» de munitions de la part du ministère britannique de la Défense, note Steve Cardew.
Deux de ces contrats concernent principalement des calibres de 155 mm --largement utilisés en Ukraine. Le dernier en date, annoncé jeudi à l’AFP, consacre 20 millions de livres à des munitions pour des armes légères.
Ils s’ajoutent aux 2,4 milliards de livres sterling (2,7 milliards d’euros) répartis sur 15 ans prévus par l’accord 'Next Generation Munitions Solution (NGMS)' conclu par BAE Systems pour fournir des munitions à Londres, et entré en application en janvier.

En septembre, le groupe, qui dit avoir déjà fabriqué «une grande partie des équipements fournis» par les gouvernements soutenant l’Ukraine, a également annoncé s’implanter directement dans le pays auquel elle espère fournir des armes légères. Le même mois, Londres annonçait avoir déjà livré plus de 300 000 obus d’artillerie à l’Ukraine.
### 93 000 employés dans 40 pays
L’accélération de la demande de munitions se traduit par des embauches: 200 personnes devraient être recrutées cette année dans trois usines britanniques, dont Washington, dans une ancienne région industrielle du nord-est de l’Angleterre, sujette à un chômage supérieur au taux national.
Au total, BAE Systems dit employer plus de 93 000 personnes dans 40 pays, dont 39 600 au Royaume-Uni. Depuis le début du récent conflit entre Israël et le Hamas, les actions du groupe ont grimpé d’environ 13%. Elles ont quasi doublé depuis le début de l’invasion russe de l’Ukraine. Comme d’autres fabricants d’armes, «il est fort probable que (BAE Systems) continuera à profiter de l’intensification des conflits dans le monde, au détriment des civils», regrette le Dr Sam Perlo-Freeman, coordinateur de recherche pour l’ONG Campaign against arms trade, interrogé par l’AFP.
Mais si l’implication de Londres en faveur de l’Ukraine dans la guerre qui l’oppose à la Russie semble peu contestée par l’opinion publique britannique, il en va différemment d’autres conflits. Vendredi, des dizaines de syndicalistes ont bloqué une autre installation de BAE Systems, située à Rochester (Kent), dans le sud-est de l’Angleterre, accusant le groupe britannique de fabriquer des composants d’avions militaires utilisés par Israël pour bombarder Gaza dans la guerre contre le Hamas.
