it does look like tape. I wouldn't call it a trainer (still not pointing it at anyone), but is likely an added safety measure for training purposes.
I find everything about it awkward but it's the proper draw for carrying at 5 o'clock. That looks like it might be Massad Ayoob who is a legend in firearms training.
Everything looks textbook. Cleared cover garment completely, high up to the chest. going in for a solid grip high on the back strap. Trigger finger straight and high so it rests a long slide and not in the guard.

My first car was an '83 Dodge Aries cost $25, then $125 to put a clutch in with my dad. next I had an 81 Chevy citation I think $175 at the time. then I got two 1979 mustang but it had a body one had an engine. I smashed it to make one decent car
so true. My first three vehicles combined cost less than $1k including repairs I did. And that got me through 4-5 years.
