It’s a natural progression. The conflict with the IRA was Britains own “Patriot Act” moment. They’ve had ANPR (license plate recognition), and CCTV everywhere for years.

There is no constitution, so no concept of 4th amendment. If you get pulled over driving in the UK, they’ve already established via ANPR whether you have a license, if the car is inspect, if you have insurance, if you have any outstanding warrants or prior convictions. Facial recognition (LFR) has been deployed for over a decade.

Suppressing speech is simply the next step.

I’d even go one step further and say that many from tradfi suffer from a problem known as ultracrepidarianism. This phenomenon comes from a person having a particularly well developed knowledge set (let’s say tradfi bond markets) and they believe that this bestows high levels of expertise in many other areas of adjacency (Bitcoin for example). The term comes from the Latin “ne supra crepidam sutor iudicaret” has its roots in a story involving the ancient Greek painter Apelles and a shoemaker, meaning “let the shoemaker not judge beyond the sandal.”

It’s a constant struggle. On one hand I want to use nostr more, on the other hand I want to use all social media less and have less screen time. Best I can do is only use nostr when I allow myself screen time.

“Woke” is often used pejoratively to describe those with differing views, particularly regarding “social justice”.

It’s also often used to virtue signal to others of a similar mindset their alignment with the shared ideology, or when used pejoratively aims to provoke a negative reaction from others.

Same, I ended up moving to another distro (mynodebtc.com) - not had a spot of bother since. But then mynode isn’t as fancy and doesn’t do as many other things. It just does a really good job of being a node for btc and LN and other ecosystem stuff (jam, nostr, etc).
