Our kids won't believe us, that back then, we used to throw money at each other every week for 30 minutes straight juet for the hell of it.
#zapathon

In 2 minutes.
Yes, we can. I for instance have 2.5x the number of followers here than I ever had on Twitter. The trick is to have barely any followers on Twitter. :D
You cannot yet. You can however create it on satellite.earth or nostr.kiwi and interact with it in Amethyst.
Creating communities and more should be possible in Amethyst soon.
It was a part of a longer comment, but I feel the need to highlight an idea.
The beauty of zaps is that you can make someone smile and feel appreciated for a price eqivalent of a single Skittle.
You can do it instantly and for anybody in the world who has a Nostr account with a connected wallet.
At first I didn't really understand why I would Zap notes. Looking back, it surprises me, how naturally it came as a habit to send a couple sats for for good memes or thought provoking posts.
As a conclusion, even if you don't understand why would you go through the hassle of getting a LN wallet and connecting it to your account, I highly reccommend doing so. It costs literally nothing in terms of money and close to nothing in terms of time.
Zaps are micropayments to other nostr users. Zapping is the action of sending sats to someone.
Sats are an abbreviation for Satoshi, which is the smallest fraction of bitcoin. (1/100M of btc)
So zapping someone is just sending him some money.
In order to do this you need to get a lightning network (LN) wallet. You can get one very easily by downloading Wallet of Satoshi from your app store. Then you just copy paste adress of that wallet into whatever client you are using. (usually you can find this easily somewhere in settings)
As for reasons why you would do that, there are many and none. You may send a couple sats just to show a more tangible appreciation of a post than a simple like or zhank you comment. You mqy send some just for shits n giggles. You may do so, to help a fellow pleb in need, or for literally any reason you can think of.
For instance #zapathon is quite fun and will be taking place later today. Starting at 22GMT0 and then for the next 30 minutes we all zap whatever notes include the #zapathon tag. It's a cultural thing, which you may end up loving or ignoring completely.
Zaps are not strictly neccessary for using Nostr, but they provide an enhanced experience. Receiving even a couple sats, is far more appealing than receiving likes, because it means, what you post is actually worth for others enough to send you some money.
The beauty of Zaps is that, you can make someone smile and feel appreciated for literally a cent or two. That's very cheap happiness and it is very addictive.
Sounds fun, but I only play single player games. Never seem to find mates to play with. (Or at least not mates, that I would enjoy playing with)

Yes, I am a part of that change. Joined a couple weeks ago.
Still, the estabilished platforms usually operate with userbases of tens of millions or more of unique users. We afaik operate with tens of thoushands of unique users.
Right now is dev and small niche era. As user base grows this will change too.
Ask the users. Do they want it? Do they need it? Will they scream at you for not doing something else instead?
Also you must know your position on the market. If you are a big fish already, working on optimalizations most of the time is likely the way to go.
If you are still trying to acquire your userbase, more aggressive development of new, possibly attractive features might be what puts you on the map.
Still, asking the users is very cheap and quick.
Expecting pretty much anything from Nostr is too early. The tech is not mature yet and userbase is still very small.
Out of all the things that I could imagine harming Nostr, envy wasn't very high on the list.
My first wild and maybe unsubstantiated guess would be, that creators are used to being the celebrities elsewhere and take it hard, that it doesn't work like that here yet. (sic)
Exactly the disparity you are describing usually applies to other plstforms in reverse. Creators are usually praised for every fart, while devs don't get any attention.
I'd say this is caused by (CMMIIW) Nostr having a user base with an abnormally large share of tech and devs. (for now) I think however. that this will eventually stabilize and as Nostr gets eventually settled by normies, things will become more and more like elsewhere.
Also why is not getting Zaps so frustrating here, but not getting any Zaps elsewhere is not? They likely went through rheir entire career without a single zap until they joined Nostr. Why would that suddenly be a problem?
It is, if you are looking for fast pretty.
As far as I can tell, it reposts everything with the word fuck in it. Wait and see. This will get reposted too. :D
That is most certainly interesting. Perhaps everybody ends up in requests unless you have history of DMs with them?
If it were up to me, I'd let your follows (not followers tho) let you DM without a request and let requests just be mostly spam with the occasional gem or as you propose having an option to limit who can DM you. Both seem to me to be equally valid solutions.

I thought that is how it works and everybody else just ends up in Message requests. Is that not so?
