You’re right! Especially for older versions like the S9. I have relatively cheap power in Texas but still lose about 80 cents per day. I enjoy tinkering with miners and the idea of non-KYC sats (and being able to hear my garage), so I’m happy to pay the fee…but yes not profitable! Have looked into solar a bit but really, you have to scale up relatively big to be profitable.
