i have bad news friends. that $1,000 off that i got on my $3,800 Acer Predator Triton 17 X Gaming Laptop may have been a self own as i will be trying to return it on Monday ...

i have previously had one multimedia laptop, one business class laptop, one macbook pro and two mobile workstations but i never had a gaming laptop before and that's why i bought the wrong one - i had no idea what i was doing ...

i had no idea how hot those things get - i don't mean the CPU / GPU thermals - i mean how hot the keyboard gets

i have completely overlooked keyboard temperature when shopping - i just saw $1,000 off for laptop with RTX4090 and Mini-LED screen and i jumped on that deal ...

but after about an hour of gaming the keyboard gets too hot ... the 6.8 pound CNC milled aluminum chassis just slowly heats up to the point where you can't rest your hand on it ... it's fine for like the first 10 minutes of play but then it starts to get worse and worse ...

now the challenge is to find a replacement that will somehow cheat the laws of physics and not heat up LOL ... but spoiler alert i was looking whole week and the guys who make these laptops aren't bright enough to solve this issue ...

Razer Blade comes the closest to solving the problem but holy **** it's almost $2,000 more than what i paid for the Predator that has the same specs !

but what i learned in building speakers was the same as what i learned in building computers - that most DIYers are completely delusional and believe that the outcome is a function of quality of parts used not level of knowledge used in design.

i had an idiot tell me that he can design a subwoofer as well as JBL ( basically a Dell equivalent to speakers ) because he has a shitty free program that simulates bass response. this would be like saying i can design a computer as well as Dell because i watch Gamers Nexus. but idiots actually believe this.

yes you can design a computer that works better than Dell does. but you will spend TWICE as much money on parts as Dell does, and then you will simply not count the cost of Windows as well as not count the cost of your own time to make it seem like you won in the end. you will also overlook minor problems in the final result that you would not have overlooked in a store bought PC / speaker.

this is a known psychological effect - we value things we have created higher than they really are worth. this is why DIY is a thing. it's not about sticking it to the man. it's about Dunning Kruger.

this is why i have really shifted from DIY to Analysis. instead of building flawed things i teach others how not to.

Dells aren't designed to last longer than warranty period, but depending on the class of the machine the warranty may be as long as 7 years ( on Servers ).

top DIY market motherboards and power supplies come with 12 year warranties now, but i like to replace computers every 5 years anyway and Dell does offer 5 year warranty on the class of machines i buy from them ( workstations ) and workstation warranty is next business day on-site. you don't lift a finger - the tech comes to you.

i actually feel oppressed by the fact that my 12 year old DIY PC still works, because i don't use it but i'm also too cheap to just throw it out.

only downsides to old machines failing is it's harder to get your data but you should back up your data anyway.

i once heard a saying " data that isn't backed up doesn't exist " and i agree with that. it's similar to " you only own what you can defend " and so on.

your personal time is better spent backing up your data than trying to build an indestructible computer.

our goal should be for the avatars to look as the user intended. in this way square with rounded edges is a step forward. but bright color outline is two steps back.

there should either be no outline, a black outline or a very thin color outline if you MUST use color to convey some status information or whatever.

the thick bright color outline completely blows the avatar itself away. the brain focuses on the outline not the avatar, making all avatars look the same if you squint.

i also think avatars could be bigger, but i mentioned that point before.
