Yeah it sort of doesn't make sense for them, you can sort of see it from their pov, they need footfall, they're probably relying a lot on revenue stream from a large audience cos the % of donations is v small. Large numbers needed to be worthwhile.

I'm mostly with you. I think the gaming example is a bit dubious. Probably the best game released in ages, amongst a whole garbage heap of both paid and free to play, is a paid game - Elden Ring. Free to play is mostly trash, disposable and will have not much of a fond legacy. There are some exceptions obviously.
Just a little aside. I appreciate the argument tho, I'm just not all that onboard with that analogy.

'Some background: back in the day, I used to be very active on Dubstepforum. In the early days there used to be a website, barefiles.com, run by Deapoh, which quickly became the unofficial archive for dubstep mixes. If I'm not mistaken, some radiostations actually used the site as their official archive as well. Unfortunately, barefiles.com had shut down by late 2000.
Around 2013/2014 there were some efforts to start a new barefiles, called AlpacaFiles. I quickly wrote something in Python, and some forum members started uploading some mixes. Unfortunately, life caught up with me, and the whole thing sort of fizzled out.
While looking for some stuff on an old hard drive, I ran into an old backup of the AlpacaFiles data. Because I know that there is still some demand for old mixes like these, I decided to upload them and share them with you. I still have a lot of old mixes myself somewhere, I might dig these up and upload them too.
I uploaded them to IA because (a) it's free and (b) they had an easy to use bulk upload feature so I could use scripting. Not the most ideal website to listen to mixes on, so feel free to recommend alternatives.'
