Honest question though. What difference does it make? Isn’t the wine ‘finished’ when you package it?

“Tariffs would only affect imported wine. I’ll just buy American.”

WRONG!

American wine depends on global parts:

Cork → Portugal

Barrels → France

Machinery → Italy

Bottles → China

You can’t untangle a system like that overnight.🧵

Cork comes from cork oak trees.

Over 80% of it is harvested in Portugal and Spain.

There are no commercial cork forests in the U.S.

Even if you planted one tomorrow, you’d be waiting 25+ years before it could be harvested.

Barrels are a winemaker’s spice rack.

French oak: tight grain, adds structure and spice

American oak: broader grain, gives sweetness and coconut

Hungarian oak: earthier, more restrained

You can’t just swap one for another—

and even if you wanted to, the trees they’re made from take 80–120 years to grow.

Most winemaking equipment comes from Europe—especially Italy.

Presses, bottling lines, destemmers—tools perfected over generations of winemakers.

You could build more factories here.

But the highest-quality tools will still be made abroad.

By 2018, China was producing around 75% of the bottles used in American wine.

Glass is heavy, energy-intensive, and slow to scale.

China had the capacity. The U.S. relied on it.

Then 25% tariffs hit.

Chinese bottle imports dropped 55% in a year.

The U.S. never recovered full capacity.

Most bottles now come from O-I and Ardagh, but lead times are long and prices are up.

Tariffs are set to rise again in 2025.

Capacity is still being built out—seven years after the first shock.

You can grow the grapes here.

You can ferment them here.

But if you want to bottle that wine,

you’ll need cork from Portugal,

glass from China,

and barrels from trees planted in another century.

That’s the global backbone of American wine.

This might be heretical but couldn’t you put it in one of those boxes with a foil bag inside?😬 I guess they’re probably made in china as well.

Since you made the initial claim why don’t we start with you showing us an example of a species of tree that has a trunk with vertices.

But 1/2 of your argument is that only biology can make geometric shapes. That has been shown to be a false claim which casts doubt on your entire argument and therefore the burden of proof is on you to prove that these formations cannot be formed by geological processes.

I think you’re setting a low bar for what constitutes genius.

If I push a candle in a direction and it’s not in a closed container the flame will not move in the direction of the force. Anyone who has ever carried anything with a flame on it will tell you that is true.

This phenomenon is caused by the flame being in the sealed container. From the candles point of view the earth is accelerating towards it. From the earths point of view the candle (+the jar and air inside) is accelerating towards it. The physics that explain both are the same. Therefore we have to look at other factors to decide which is actually happening. Is the earth moving up to meet the container or is the container moving down to meet the earth. Since we know from many observations that the earth is a sphere, unless it is expanding it cannot be moving ‘up’ in every direction at the same time. If the earth was expanding it would be observable and measurable, and this has neither been observed or measured therefore it’s reasonable to conclude that it is no the earth moving to meet the container but the container moving to meet the earth.

So are you saying that when something ‘falls’ towards the earth it does not accelerate?

I did an experiment at school when I was 13 using wooden cars, ticker tape and weights to demonstrate that acceleration due to gravity is not affected by mass but they all did still accelerate.

I’m not trying to be a troll but you are going to have to explain in much simpler terms what it is that I don’t understand here.

I understand orientation.

I’m asking you to explain to me how the world can be moving ‘up’ for everyone at the same time unless it’s flat.

As an extreme example, how can it be moving ‘up’ for someone on the North Pole and someone on the South Pole at the same time.

Just to avoid confusion I do not think the earth is flat, it’s demonstrably a sphere and I can’t tally that with your assertion that when you drop something it doesn’t fall down but the earth moves ‘up’ to meet it.

The flat earthers who went to the South Pole and observed the 24hrs sun.

Anyone who’s ever been into space.

Eratosthenes

If it’s moving upward for me how can it be moving upward for some on the other side of the globe?
