If an experimental physicist doesn't get an academic job, then she leaves research and goes silent. But #archaeology isn't expensive. It's been the other way around with me. A major reason that I became one of the loudest and most productive research scholars of my generation is that nobody gave me a full-time academic teaching job to keep me busy, fed and quiet. This eventually instead led to me getting an overseas research position, but not until 16 years after my viva.
