Makes sense. Did you have any humidity problems with the nucs?
We did a group build of swarm traps and hives to keep costs lower.
Concurr with starting with two hives. This is in case one hive has an issue, then you can use the other hive to help it.
Local swarms are acclimated. I'm not going to purchase non- local bees again.

Might want to consider an insulated layens hive as well. These do well in Northen Europe and Russia.
I've made my hives from the free plans at horizontalhive.com and recommend Dr Leo's seminar. He has a number of youtube videos and there is a play list on the Offgrid with Doug & Stacy channel
Always something new to learn! I'm right there with you.
I attempted with a top bar before, but have learned that I should catch and work with local swarms, similar to working with local plants for your zone. Also I'm going to use the techniques from "beekeeping with a smile"
Hope you find a good place so you can start again!
Using a laptop charger to attach (melt) foundation to the homemade layens frames. #bees #natural #grownostr

I'm excited to start my hives this spring! How many do you have?
Excited to start bees! Here I'm wiring homemade layens frames. #natural beekeeping #bees #grownostr

This is how I’ve been working to solve the winter problem. Roughly 2 inch insulation on sides and top but still using Langstroth frames. Didn’t do the bottom last year and that’s why I think 2/3 of the nucs didn’t make it. #bees #grownostr
Happy Spring all! It’s warming up enough in Southern Ontario so we can get in hives. Our August swarm survived and we found the queen. #grownostr #bees
