I'm an older dude. I explain self custody like raising children.
Always watching over them and their security. Keeping tabs on them making sure they don't get involved in questionable relationships. Verify I have access to and can rescue them/us if ever needed. Dont brag too much about them. Keep the means to protect them 24/7. Have a plan should I go first, someone I choose can pick up where I left off.
