When miners say that fees need to increase by the halving in order to survive, why is that a necessity?
I would think that if the block rewards are cut in half, so long as the value of the BTC they're earning would make up the difference.

I think the root of the argument comes down to the difference between "unified intent" and satoshi's initial assumed intent (since we can't exactly ask satoshi for clarification). It's not anyone's responsibility to assume satoshi's vision any more now than it was during the fork wars.
