All anyone wants is follower count so they get more exposure and more zaps.

It feels like zaps--fractions of a cent--are the sole motivation there to write thoughtful posts. Nobody writes to actually discuss...They just blast out some message and look at all the fractions of a cent they earned for it. No personal connection, no thoughtful back and forth (unless it's circlejerking over how smart everyone is for buying bitcoin), nothing.

All the "positive vibes" are a meaningless veneer in front of the underlying greed and soulless worship of money.

Call them out on it, and their solution is to post generic pictures of some camping trip before going right back to screeching about bitcoin saving the world.

Crucible World is going down for an update, might never come back, we'll see (no I'm not backing anything up lol)

And nah, I'm passionate but not upset. If I get just one person to realize they're on the path to worshiping money (albeit in a different form) and that they should reconsider whether it's worth their mental energy, then it was a success.

Alas, critical thinkers on nostr are few and far between.

They just see "number of likes and comments," not real people. This is another problem with Nostr...On fedi I feel like I'm actually getting a feel for people's personalities, but over on nostr it's just a big numbers game as everyone tries to be the most popular.

Four possibilities about an afterlife (that is affected by the actions/beliefs in this life):

You don’t believe, and you are correct

You don’t believe, and you are incorrect

You do believe, and you are correct

You do believe, and you are incorrect

From a pragmatic, r/agnostic-tier standpoint, each of these has the same probability of being the case.

Options 1) and 4) lead to the same thing–the eternal nothingness that atheist/nihilist faggots really, really seem to hope is the case for some reason. So if there’s no afterlife, then whether you believe or not, it doesn’t matter–into the void you go, and on the infinite timescale, it’s like you never even existed and nothing you thought or did mattered.

However, option 2) has far worse implications and option 3) has far better implications than the others, and this is where it gets interesting. If you obstinately choose not to believe, and you live your life accordingly, then you’re in big trouble–condemnation awaits. Likewise, if you choose to believe (and live accordingly), then you are rewarded and can enjoy eternal life, something we can’t really comprehend in this mortal form.

So to boil it down, you can either believe and have a 50/50 of nothingness or eternal life, or you can not believe and have a 50/50 of nothingness or eternal condemnation.

Of course, it’s really not that simple when it comes down to it. In the end, this life is a test of the soul, and God decides what to do with each individual afterward. (Or maybe it’s just a fairytale, but is that risk really worth taking?)

The owner of the domain, obviously.

Well, I own a domain and I "verify identity" of people you hate. I do it on purpose because it makes you mad and I'm a big meanie troll doodoohead.

The people I verify just so happen to like talking to each other. They're a community. Maybe they talk out-of-band on Matrix or Discord or whatever.

Lots of people hate that community because they and the one who "verifies" them are a bunch of booger eaters. So what's the obvious solution? Let a person block the entire domain--any pubkey verified by that domain doesn't show up anymore.

Or maybe I'm just a spammer who wants to break through everyone's clients by "verifying" my many spam accounts (so many that nobody can hope to manually report them all). I buy my own cheap domain name and use it to get a fancy little checkmark or whatever clients decide to show, and then spam away. The obvious solution? Don't trust that domain to verify pubkeys.

This sort of thing is going to become commonplace.

"Verification" works when you trust the verifiers. Right now Nostr has mostly good (albeit very boring) actors and verifiers, but that is going to change if momentum picks up.

I haven't followed the nips lately, but I've heard whispers that this is something they're trying to address.

For instance, there's really no point in picking one relay over another. They're all basically the same with relatively minor differences. Certainly there's no way for communities to form around a relay, so what's the point of operating a relay other than some vague sense of contribution? That motivates the naive PV crowd, but in the real world the liability is just too high.
