Alright nostriches. I finally have enough done and feel comfortable to share my progress on HAMSTR.
You are about to witness perhaps the first ever(well outside of the 2,000 ones I have done testing, lol) nostr note retrieved exclusively over HF packet ham radio.
There is no Internet access on this browser at the moment at all.
It is a client - server setup. The client is fully off-grid. Only the server can connect to the internet. For this test, the server is was roughly 500 feet away using dummy loads on my radios putting out virtually zero watts. Yes, not far, but in theory it would similar at hundreds and even thousands of miles away as well.
This test pulls my most recent notes from my fake dev account following list. In this case 1 note. The number of notes is configurable, but keep in mind HF Packet Radio is SLOW. This one note takes quite a while for just tiny note from nostr:nprofile1qqsywt6ypu57lxtwj2scdwxnyrl3sry9typcstje65x7rw9a2e5nq8sprpmhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuumwdae8gtnnda3kjctvqydhwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnzd96xxmmfdecxzunt9e3k7mgpp4mhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mq9hxafw. Future versions will have FM Data packets as well, but line of sight FM was not my goal. Global coverage was. HF radio is the only way for that.
Most functionality is now working, just ironing out some things and lots of bugs. Following, global, search, hash tags, npub search display names, are all basically working. Soon replies.
What started out as a project for me to use some social media and take camping and do some off-grid nostr stuff has now morphed into something that I believe will be able to help millions of people be able to bypass oppressive regimes, firewalls, tyranny, and allow them to interact with the nostr network using nothing but ham radios. This could be massive for learning, comms, and overall freedom. Could have a server running in France, and connect to it from Russia or Afghanistan for example. Easily within HF radio reach for half the world.
Much like the winlink email network, I hope people will be able to take my project and setup servers all around the world for people to access, read, write notes, send DM's, use various nostr kinds and even send Bitcoin(on chain offline transactions over HF radio and nostr coming soon).
Lots to come!
Note: pardon the phone screen cap, it isn't quite working fully android Firefox or chrome yet.

I’ve tried typing a reply many times. All I can say is my mind is blown. Are you the inventor or are you building on others’ work?
Cool idea, seems like a potential solution. Appreciate the discussion. I too am just spitballing, but this kind of productive discussion is what I’m on nostr for.
I believe cookies are stored on the client. So the reason for the intrusive cookies confirmation banners is that the site is asking permission to store those cookies on your device. I don’t think a signature from your nsec would match this use case. But maybe you could use your nsec to add in your own client’s “policy” so that you don’t need to be asked about it. I guess cookies are dumb and they’ll be done away with. But businesses do like to have some sort of analytics on their site visitors. Fine with that, just looking to automate that policy and place control with the client. And do it in a way that’s not retarded like the current way (cookies prompts).
hi, I think so, but tbh I'm not enough of a dev to weigh in on that. I just think these UX patterns are really disruptive. I don't know what web browsing on nostr would look like but I think it should strive to solve these.
I don't think any gov should be able to regulate how clients build their sites and require things like cookies banners. Cookies architecture is something that could be replaced - by what, not sure.
Verification codes could be sent to an npub instead of a phone number. Can't wait for this.
It's annoying when bad UX patterns are adopted by businesses because 1) they're mandated, or 2) they choose to adopt them bc "experts" have recommended. 2 factor verif involving a phone is a good example - imo completely reckless due to sim swap attacks. "Best practice" tho!
It all revolves around separating web from identity: Stop trying to figure out who I am, just let me browse and do business on the web.
Welcome! You’ll fit in great around here
Welcome! We could use a nostr ambassador like you who can explain in non-tech language why nostr is the future to the tictok and X normies
It’s gonna get deleted one these days I swear. I feel like a fake corporate bitch whenever I scroll on there
Can you use an old laptop and hard drive to run a node?
UX is dead. Friction from cookies billboards, verification codes, cloudflare traffic checks ruins web browsing
I’ve finally figured out that I really just want very few things in my life:
- to be stacking sats for my parents as they age
- stacking sats for myself
- to be playing/writing/learning/teaching music AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE so I can sing to the world
- to be strong and eating real food
- finding time/sats to see the world
- learning languages so I can speak to the world
- to be enjoying life while I’m working towards these goals
duckduckgo’s just because it doesn’t require an account to use
Thanks Matt, I’m trying to enjoy the holidays and relax with my family and the IRS just has to fuck up my evening and ensure I’m compliant
I like coldcard. Well made. Can use them in a simple way or more advanced ways (airgap). I like navigating the device and the helpful prompts/warnings it gives you when performing actions. Pair with Sparrow wallet and you have a great experience.
Hard clip. Waiting for my family and friends to wake up.
