Nostr and Bitcoin key handling is very similar on the tech side.

But there is an important difference: with Bitcoin one usually uses multiple pubkeys or even clients, and want to hide any relationship between those. In Nostr, one mostly wants the same identity (pubkey) across different clients.

How many users are on Nostr?

Well, it doesn't really matter, the fact is it's growing!

Recently I've heard numbers like 250k or more.

With a little crawling (follows lists) I found ~160k pubkeys.

You're journey at Swan was probly great, but just listen to your heart! And to the birds!

BTW, your contribution to Nostr are incredible! ❤

In here there are about 320 pubkeys with over 1k followers, the top having 24k (as found by a little crawling).

Nostr is huge, but plenty of room to grow.

The relay selection in Gossip is great.

I also understand that there are some deliberate choices to enable working with no ID imported as well; keeping follows and relay lists even with no identity.

Used to other clients, I expect that importing an identity leads to showing the follow list and feed, without manually entering relays. If this is not possible by design, I can live with that (then my trick is to keep multiple gossip data dirs and rotating them).

Currently I cannot say if something is buggy or by design, and frankly I have not spent the time to systematically test it; sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. But e.g. now after ID import and manually adding my 8 relays it found my metadata (sometimes that’s sporadic too), but not my follower list (it was updated recently),

I usually import only pubkey, I’m not sure if that’s relevant.

In @gossip, I often have chicken-and-egg problem:

- it cant fetch anything until I manually enter some relays

- relays used are picked based on follows list, if the follows list is empty, it does not connect to a relay

- even after I add relays, it often has difficult getting my meta, or my follows list

Cashu -- ecash+BTC/LN combo -- is a great idea.

As I see, it combines the drawbacks of

- self-custody solutions (you can lose your funds)

- custodian solutions (they can rug you)

:))) Still, it's a great idea!

The future of gossip: Gossip will always be free and MIT licensed. I have no plans to monetize this situation at all (I am doing okay in life already). I will not start building private paid-for extensions, nor will I set up any public relays that charge. And I will continue working on gossip in my free time for the forseeable future.

[For those who which to monetize their clients somehow, I am not saying that is wrong, for many people will have different situations and make different choices and I'm in a good position to do it this way.]

I started this project with full knowledge that if I wanted gossip to succeed, it's best chance was to be MIT licensed and fully open, and that I would not make money doing this (as it turned out, donations far exceed my expectations). And I wanted gossip to succeed for many reasons, the first and most selfish of which is that I wanted a nostr client for myself that I fully understood and had full control over. But I also take pride in doing my part to save the world from government tyranny and corporate walled garden tyranny.

The heavy lifting happened over Christmas break 2022, and ongoing work will probably never be as intense. But it doesn't need to be. It works pretty damn well as it is, and the spare time I dedicate to it should be enough to keep it viable and competitive on at least some grounds with other clients. And we have a handful of other developers helping out. If other clients supecede it on all fronts, bravo to them and I will quit. But I don't see that happening anytime soon. So I'm here to stay.

I love this community. Pura Vida! 🤙💜

Most open source software and many great ideas would not exist if there were no committed people working hard and sharing for free.

Thank you and PV 🤙

I don't care about how many (or few) followers I have, but I like Coracle, because it shows slightly higher count than other clients :)

90% of my Rust compile errors are fixed by prepending a '&' before an expression.

9% is removing a '&'.

1% is others -- like prepending a '*'.

I'm still wrapping my head around this... 😲
