Not makeup: the humans have limited resources and the star beings don’t use makeup. But due to few resources, there are enforced limits on humans’ hair length. Atsushi & Girak both press their luck with this, using their higher genetic ratings to get away with it. Atsushi has medium length hair, & Girak, who loves history, has a beard. Hair styles with the star beings are related to whether or not they’re Crowned.
