UK businesses to suffer if TikTok banned in the US
==========
The potential ban of TikTok in the US could have negative consequences for UK businesses. TikTok is a popular social media platform owned by the Chinese company ByteDance. The US government has expressed concerns about the app's data privacy and security, and is considering banning it. If the ban goes into effect, UK businesses that rely on TikTok for marketing and advertising could lose a valuable platform to reach their target audience. TikTok has a large user base in the US, and UK businesses have been using the platform to promote their products and services. The ban would disrupt their marketing strategies and potentially lead to a loss of customers and revenue. The UK government is also concerned about the potential ban, as it could impact the country's economic relationship with the US. The ban would not only affect UK businesses, but also content creators and influencers who have built their careers on TikTok. They would lose access to a significant portion of their audience and may need to find alternative platforms to continue their work. Overall, the ban of TikTok in the US would have far-reaching consequences for UK businesses and individuals who rely on the platform for their marketing and content creation efforts.
Hong Kong, China and a footballing dilemma
==========
On 1 January, Hong Kong beat China in a football game for the first time in almost 30 years. The name of Hong Kong's team changed in 2023 and has led to speculation that the days of an independent football scene in the former British colony are numbered. Hong Kong's latest win over China is not their greatest, as that came in May 1985 when a 2-1 victory in World Cup qualifying shocked 80,000 fans at the Beijing Workers' Stadium. Before that match, Hong Kong sang God Save the Queen as their anthem. Football has become an arena in which Hong Kong's liberal democratic history and the authoritarian traditions of the mainland have clashed. Football's importance became apparent after the 2014 Umbrella Movement, a series of pro-democratic protests in Hong Kong. In 2015, Hong Kong hosted China in a World Cup qualifier and some home fans booed their own anthem, leading to fines by Fifa. In 2020, Hong Kong's legislature passed a bill that criminalized disrespect to the anthem. Three months later, the 83 sporting associations in Hong Kong were told to add "China" to their names or risk losing funding. The current leadership of the Hong Kong Football Association still sees China as an opportunity. The dilemma for the HKFA is if it is to remain a separate entity, it will have to make itself useful to Beijing. The addition of the word "China" to Hong Kong's name may be a sign of assimilation and the eventual loss of independence.

The London Marathon runners proud to be last
==========
About 50 people completed the London Marathon after the finish line on The Mall was packed away. Fred Tomlinson, a 75-year-old runner from Doncaster, came last in over 13 hours. He was supported by a team of about 100 tailwalkers. Tomlinson runs the marathon every year for Rainbow Trust Children's Charity in memory of his daughter. Shone Surendran managed to cross the official finish line just before it closed, with the help of tailwalkers. Tailwalkers were introduced in 2021 after the 2019 race was criticized for lack of support for slower runners. Jo Gennari, who works for the NHS, was instrumental in setting up the group of tailwalkers. Tim Norman, a volunteer for The Samaritans, said the participants at the back of the pack are equally worthy of their medals as the elite athletes. BBC journalist Charlie Jones supported a woman named Terri Sarno, who had fallen behind the eight-hour pace. Shreena Kotecha formed a group called Team Finish Together to improve the experience for slower participants. She ran the marathon two years ago and was disappointed by the lack of crowds towards the end. Team Finish Together aims to celebrate the final finishers and provide support.

Campaigners to sue over plans for greenbelt homes
==========
Campaign group Save Greater Manchester’s Greenbelt is taking legal action over controversial plans to build thousands of new homes on greenbelt land. The project called Places for Everyone aims to build 175,000 homes in total, along with industrial sites, on both brownfield and greenbelt land. Nine of the 10 boroughs in Greater Manchester have signed up to the plan, with Stockport opting out. Around 20,000 houses are still planned for greenbelt areas. The campaign group believes there is enough brownfield land to build all the homes the region needs and insists there is 'no requirement' to use the greenbelt. The group has issued a pre-action protocol letter and is fundraising for the legal challenge.

ED waiting times most concerning to those surveyed
==========
A survey of patients using the Royal Cornwall Hospital's Emergency Department (ED) found that lengthy waiting times was the issue that most concerned them. The report from Healthwatch Cornwall surveyed 92 people in Truro's ED over two days in September and October last year. Other concerns raised included parking, inadequate signage, and cleanliness. Debbie Richards, chief executive at Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, welcomed the report saying it "provides a useful insight". The report found that 87% of people had sought advice prior to traveling to the department and 76% had traveled there by private transport. Respondents were also asked about their financial situation, how they felt about their ED experience, and what they felt could be improved. Kim O’Keeffe, chief nursing officer at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust, said their staff work "tirelessly" and that it is heartening to see that many patients were satisfied with the care they received and felt they were treated with compassion.
What $61bn US aid boost could mean for Ukraine
==========
The article discusses the potential impact of a $61 billion US aid boost on Ukraine. The aid package, which includes military assistance, is aimed at countering Russian aggression and supporting Ukraine's economic development. The funding will be provided over a 10-year period, with $3 billion allocated for military aid. The aid boost comes as Ukraine faces ongoing conflict with Russia and economic challenges. It is seen as a significant show of support from the US and a signal to Russia. The aid package is expected to strengthen Ukraine's military capabilities and help stabilize its economy. However, there are concerns about corruption and the effective use of the funds. The article also highlights the geopolitical implications of the aid boost, including its impact on US-Russia relations and the broader regional dynamics in Eastern Europe.
