What is the story on relays? How do I know good from mediocre? How many do I realistically need? Do I need to designate a specific relay to receive DM?

i presume I need to connect a wallet to pay for a paid relay - a concept I support - but how do I execute that? What does that process (the paying a relay part) look like? At present, are paid relays delivering any significant value vs free? How does one determine which paid relay(s) to support?

Chat application network architectures are primarily divided into: centralized model, federated model, relay model, and P2P model.

Chat software developed by major companies primarily uses a centralized server network architecture, such as WhatsApp and Telegram. Signal App also follows this model. Only large companies can run their own servers and have the greatest control.

The XMPP protocol and Matrix protocol use a federated server network architecture. The most famous example of a federated server network architecture is Email. Users can choose which federated server to use. Servers communicate with each other, and users do not need to know which server their friends are using.

Keychat and Simplex chat use a relay architecture. Users can choose which relay server to use. The main difference from the federated model is that relay servers do not communicate with each other.

In the relay model, users find out which relay their friends use, adding user tasks but simplifying server operations. Each relay operates independently, simplifying network design and reducing maintenance. Since relays do not communicate with each other, this setup reduces data exposure risks and improves privacy.

Keet.io uses a P2P model. Keet may be more suitable for large-scale group chats, whereas it might be less appropriate for one-on-one chats or smaller groups. Keet requires chat participants to be online simultaneously, or at least one party needs to be continuously online.

This is very helpful. Concise, understandable.

It may not be a bug by strict, technical definition, but it appears to be an annoyance quite specific to #amethyst + default #Android keyboard. I switched to #futokeyboard and the behavior stopped

Another #amethyst question(s): What is "Banner URL" in the profile? is it just any valid https link to any common image format? Or are there some requirements as with gravatars? If you set a valid Banner URL where, how and in what conditions is the banner displayed?

Is there a way to disable the weird keyboard behaviors in Amethyst? The backspace function - where words just "backup" to the prior word if you delete a couple of characters - is really annoying.

Now, where is the plain-language guide to "nostr for Dummies"? Nostr seems like a DIY lifeboat kit for passengers on the social media Titanic, and I can't be alone in my struggle to figure it out. I don't think I'm a dummy, but I sure feel like one sometimes trying to get started.

Fountain 1.1 with #nostr is now live on iOS and Android!

Why Nostr?

We regularly hear from both listeners and podcasters that the social features in Fountain are a great way to discover content that's worth listening to.

When you support a podcast, or comment on an episode, your message is surfaced to your followers in the Fountain home feed and anyone that sees these can add the content to their library.

But this came with a few problems. When you first start using Fountain you wouldn't have any followers so your posts wouldn't get seen. If you wanted to share something you were listening to, you had to choose between leaving a comment on Fountain, or sharing on another social platform.

Today we are excited to announce a massive update to Fountain that solves these problems with Nostr:

- You can bring your existing profile and followers to Fountain

- Your boosts and comments will be surfaced in other Nostr clients

- Posts shared from other Nostr clients relating to audio will appear in your feed

- Conversation and interactions now flow freely across multiple apps

I installed fountain, connected it to my nostr address. Attempted to import my podcast subscriptions via OPML. It seemed to work. Once. I went off to do something else and did not test it. When I reopened fountain my library was empty. Further attempts to import failed.

My device runs GrapheneOS. I see some refererence in the FAQs to certain functions not working on GrapheneOS.
