A regular guy, non-coder, who grapples with tech. #Bitcoin #Gunstr #NRAInstructor #FreedomTech #Moto #Privacy #SelfHost #NoGSF #deGoogle

Agreed this is one way to approach it. I run a second profile with GSF now, but I don't use it except for special situations. I run in the non-GSF profile 99% of the time. For me, convenience is a big requirement for nostr/zap interaction and profile switching would be a barrier for me in that situation. But thanks.

I have to solve this zap problem.

It appears there is no such thing as a wallet which will run on a NoGSF/NoGooglePlay #GrapheneOS phone.

What are my options for connecting an off-phone wallet or getting around the #RequiresGSF problem to send zaps on #nostr?

I anticipate some people with #readingcomprehension problems will reply with "just use appXYZ," broadcasting they're #clueless because appXYZ requires GSF/GooglePlay, which means it won't run either. Looking forward to it.

Seriously, how shocked are we? #NotShocked

The best tech people in the western world work for Sillycon Valley and Wall Street. The people running your healthcare tech are also-rans - 2nd-tier or worse. Healthcare management is utterly obtuse about the implications of healthcare data, myopic about tech security investment, and generally unsuitable for being trusted with your most private, personal data. But they are trusted with it every day.

More essential than buying a gun is learning to safely and effectively use a gun. Far more people own guns than know how to use them.

Every good instructor I know has firearms available for use by beginning students during class.

Find a good instructor, learn about guns, learn how to shoot. Then go buy.

ReplyGuy is the NSA showing #nostr who's boss.

Remember when some new social network (like Ryze. Anyone remember that?) Would pop up every single week, and you would get invites from all the people you were friends with on all the other social networks?

GM, #nostr. The best deal on coffee in Texas is #CommunityCoffee at #DrugEmporium. 12oz for $4.99. Good coffee. Great price.

Publishers are shortsighted - both book and music. This is the Don Henley problem, where Henley foolishly tries to equate every listen on a song or partial song to a lost album sale.

That's not how it works. Most people who have the money to own something like a book or CD prefer to own it. If they don't prefer to own it they prefer to pay a streaming service (Spotify or kindle Unlimited.) People who lack the resources to own a book or CD are not potential customers anyway. By striving to ensure no one ever hears an Eagles song before they pay for it Henley essentially throws away the best marketing tool he has ever had - his own music. As a result, the popularity of Henley's music is likely to decline much more rapidly over the years than musicians with more relaxed policies. The same goes for books. Lending, in a proper structure, creates and prolongs interest rather than negatively impacts sales.

I don't know who in the Open Book Project got the bright idea to institute unlimited lending in the National Emergency Lending effort. That was a very dumb, avoidable and costly mistake.

I run into this a lot. It is a barrier for me in using/connecting wallets (and other BTC/LN stuff) because I choose not to run GPS. I know there are valid reasons many #android devs use it, but it is still a barrier for me.

_Maybe_ #muun will actually work without it. I haven't gotten that far. Yet.

I am open to recommendations for wallets known to work without it. #asknostr

This is my first attempt at including an image in a note with #amethyst.

Good questions but outside my expertise. Right now I want to be able to deploy a node or relay with the same simplicity as I can currently deploy blogging or forum software. On my server/VPS. If I had that, I'd be a happy camper, for now.

The only time I ever experienced this really working was in the early days of blogging - ca. 2002-2004 or thereabouts. You could engage with smart people you didn't know and have interesting conversations. I developed a number of long-term friendships during that period.

But centralized SM has never worked that way for me. Too many people preening, looking for their "audience" of "followers," some competing to be the snarkiest person in the room, some trying (always failing) to show they're the smartest person in the room - like a dystopian scifi novel.

Gm, #nostr.

My current practice is to block and hide commenters:

- who ignore (or don't care about) the context of the original post

- who appear to have not even read the original post

- who subtract value from any potential conversation which might arise from the original post

While quote-posting commenters and others who:

- add a relevant idea which had not occurred to me

- point out a legitimate flaw in, or alternative to, my reasoning

- disagree with me is a way that adds value to any potential conversation which might arise from the og post.

I have never had this approach work for very long on the centralized SMs. It rapidly devolves into something which is boring and uninspiring. Let's see if #nostr is different.

I have had a VPS for 15 years, run my own domains, email, blogs, websites, surveys, galleries, etc. Ran NextCloud for a while. Manage my own small business infrastructure. Stuff like that. But I can do all that without having to login thru a terminal, run a bunch of apt commands, deal with dependencies, etc.

I would install ditto this afternoon, but I'm not going to do this: https://docs.soapbox.pub/ditto/install

It's way outside my comfort zone.

(Note to well-meaning but misguided commenters: Kindly refrain from "bro, it's not that hard" comments. I don't care. If you believe "it's not that hard," you're part of the problem.)
