I find this as beautiful as scary... I feel compelled to watch it and find our, but somehow I'd prefer to run away.

Any way, I find it interesting that Rex Damascus is that it is exclusive on Nostr... I am just getting started here and learning how to use it to show art content and also connect with artists.

Btw, I have never been on Twitter and I wonder if this is going to be a real issue to get people interested in what I post... Any suggestions are welcome.

I am a free and curious blackbird

.

My name Mirlo, in Spanish, means blackbird. Blackbirds are quite common black birds with an orange beak… You can see them in many gardens or parks, even in cities. Blackbirds are free birds, and I personally like flying around looking for anything interesting and valuable to pick and bring to my family’s nest wherever we settle.

A while ago I met a family who needed some advice. With a few quotes and questions I managed to help them out with some life challenges. Sometimes just a quote brought at the right time works like magic… This is the reason I like quoting wise humans from different times and places. I also like questioning to start a conversation or trigger curiosity, since “Wonder is the beginning of wisdom" (Socrates)

And this is what I intend to do for starts in #Nostr...

That family I mentioned above, many years later they named their home art-studio after me, Mirlo Studio. I am humbled for that, and since they were the ones who showed me the way to #Nostr I will also bring their voices here and share what I see in their studio.

I am a free bird, and I try to pick the best of the times and places I visit... Can awareness of different ages and spaces help make better choices for your actual personal life? I wonder, since human life takes place in both the physical world and the digital world.

Once I met a guy who told me he had been bullied at school... He was actually a good student but did not enjoy school. Instead he loved his music classes and found his best friends in this choir... later he became an accomplished classical musician and a very fine person. I asked him where he learned the most important life lessons, if he recalled some important teacher... and he answered he had the great chance to count with a family who provided more that lessons, guidance and support for him to choose his own way. Moreover, he had a few good friends and that was enough for him...

You description of public schooling is accurate, and this has been going on for a while in most countries. Thank you for pointing at this.

French Psychologist Francois Dolto called the school "La prison des esprits". She also explained how that was damaging for the psychological development of children, especially since the natural curiosity of children was sabotaged...

Fortunately homeschooling is an option in many countries. No doubt this will make a difference for next generations.

Homeschooling was the best decision I've ever made.

One of the best things about homeschooling is it allows customization to optimize education to each kid's individual strengths, weaknesses, and interests. You can spend extra time to make sure they understand the things that are difficult, so they don't lose the foundation they need for other learning. You can rush through the things they pick up quickly and not waste their time on endless repetition. When you find something that is interesting, you can take a deep dive into that area and learn a lot. There is nothing that kids will learn better or faster than something they find interesting.

It is funny when you ask a homeschooled kid what grade they are in. Sometimes they just look at Mom questioning, but most of the time the answer is something like, "Well I am in 9th grade for Math, 8th grade for History, 8th grade for English, and 11th grade in Science." They can be at the right level for themselves in each individual subject rather than being forced to be at a certain level based on their age. The right level for any particular subject may be above or below the government school level.

Since homeschooling is customized for each kid, it is also amazing if you have a gifted kid and/or a special needs kid. I have both. My gifted kid has been reading at the college level since 2nd grade and we studied relatavistic physics for fun the summer between 8th & 9th grade. He does have trouble with handwriting so we did handwriting through 8th grade, but even in elementary school, he did papers on the computer because handwriting was so difficult for him that he couldn't compose properly if he had to handwrite. My youngest son has down syndrome, is 16, but uses mostly 2nd & 3rd grade material. He has grown so much since I brought him home (for 8th grade). Nothing I used with my gifted son works with my special needs son and vice versa, but both have thrived greatly. I also have a wonderful relationship with both.

Homeschooling wasn't just good for my kids. It was wonderful for me. I got to relearn/unlearn what I had learned in school. I have a great relationship with my boys. I have the pride of seeing my oldest leaving in a few weeks and knowing he is totally ready to be on his own.

This is so refreshing! In our country, Spain, this is not an easy option... yet this is becoming a necessary choice to escape for a system that too often forgets about the most elemental human and ethics. At this stage of my life I am not personally responsible for any child, but I have devoted my life to create educational contents and still work in a music studio producing many contents for educators -at home and in schools-.

Today, neglect of the individual needs of every child and indoctrination are my main concern. So I aplaude and support homeschooling as the way for an education that respects children, parents, and free thinking...

Thanks, LibertyGal... keep enjoying these precious times with your children!

Really interesting... Thank you very much for sharing. I will try to find some time to dig into some of the links.

This is actually my first comment on Nostr... I come from a music studio where we produce educational contents for children of all ages. We align with many of the ideas expressed in this wonderful article. I am personally fond of the Socratic method for personal reflection and opening dialogues with the youngest in every day life. Today more than ever, humans need to stop and reflect,,, so difficult when technology and social media requires constant judgemental reactions.

Again, thanks!
