Hey there. Sailing update for anyone interested.

We love our boat, Silver Heels; she has had a lifetime before us and will have another lifetime after us. We chose her because we know she has the capability to take us anywhere in the world we are crazy enough to go, as long as we take care of her. Built in 1979, we knew there would be some repairs and renovations to do, accompanied with a daunting, yet motivating learning curve. Our first season, as expected, but not as hoped, involved more time getting to know the boat than actual sailing.

So far we have repaired and varnished the teak, replaced the dinghy and buoys, varnished the tiller, cleaned and re painted the hull with anti fouling, inventoried and replaced internal equipment, upgraded some navigational and safety equipment, and much more.

Our biggest challenge has been dealing with the original Pisces 40 diesel engine. On the way back from an outing, our exhaust riser decided to give way due to high amounts of corrosion in the cast iron threads. The water exhaust no longer had an exit and slowly began filling the bilge until we noticed. Luckily, we were already in the marina and could kill the engine with relative safety.

We’ve since fixed the exhaust, but in the meantime, our starter motor went kaput. En español, “No funciona”. It is now becoming clear that this engine will remain temperamental for the foreseeable future, and the prospect of a shiny new engine grows more appealing by the day.

Add in learning a new language, navigating jurisdictional bureaucracies, and working full time jobs; it is easy to get restless at times, but we trust with some patience, we’ll be out cruising on the deep blue. 🌊

Beautiful boat! Good to see more classic Ladies!

Preparing to mould more fibreglass around the deck. Hopefully I am able to get a suitable temperature under the tent I built. #restoration #sailing

Luckily my dad introduced me early.

Have a good #weekend

Awesome stickers! To guess the city was a hard one, but I guess a polish city at the Baltic coast due to some orthodox churches and a tall ship.

I honestly don’t know, the welder I have been using is an old esab, which is a recognised brand. I would definitely try to buy nice things second hand, because you get durable equipment for cheap.

If you want to try welding stick welding is fun and inexpensive. I found that the welding sticks you get at the hardware store for professionals is way better and more value than what you find at the general hardware stores.

Good morning! Not your fancy coffee typically found on #coffechain

But I still need that bean juice before going to the boat shed.

Tiller steered👌🏻

I am aiming for a sail to the Shetland isles next summer, then dream of terra del fuego and a pacific crossing. Time will tell..

Not 100% yet, just set up a lightning wallet to be able to send some zaps. Didn’t know what I did wrong until I searched the web. I am only able to zap on profiles and not post with this app.

https://medium.com/invest-gaming-journal/bitcoin-app-damus-is-removing-its-zap-feature-7e0cc8e7f004

Just learned that that #Damus had to remove zaps on notes to comply with AppStore rules.

So I might have to play around with alternative app stores. Any recommendations?

It’s a 41f steel van de Stadt from 67, long keel, and with a bit of work she will be ready for the oceans

Just a few, I am intrigued by the idea to have the spammers pay for their posts as this breaks their incentive.

Did it help you just putting the paid relay in your list? Sounds strange, I have some reading on relays to do..
