Changing Jobs is Paying Off for Americans
==========
American workers who changed jobs in March saw their salaries shoot up by 10 percent, the second straight increase. In February, pay for these workers went up by nearly 8 percent. Workers who stayed in their current positions saw wage gains of a little over 5 percent. Sectors that saw an increase in pay for workers included construction and manufacturing. Private employers added 184,000 new jobs in March, the biggest increase since July. The South led the way in job gains, adding 91,000 jobs. Small businesses with about 20 to 49 employees lost 11,000 jobs, potentially due to competition from larger firms. Workers are attracted to firms that can offer more, and with higher pay gains for job changers, they may be switching from smaller companies to larger businesses to chase more money.

US Trade Representative Reveals Why Biden Kept Trump's Tariffs on China
==========
US Trade Representative Katherine Tai said that President Joe Biden continued Trump's tariffs on Chinese goods to create American jobs. Tai emphasized that tariffs are a tool for remedying unfair trade and leveling the playing field. She also mentioned that the Biden administration is focused on revitalizing the middle class and addressing economic insecurity. The trade war between the US and China began in 2018 with trade barriers to address unfair trade deals and intellectual property theft. A recent study suggested that the tariff regime had a negative effect on employment, particularly in the agriculture industry.

Conservatives Mock Biden's 'Shrinkflation' Video About Super Bowl Snacks
==========
President Biden called on snack companies to stop 'shrinkflation' in a video ahead of Super Bowl LVIII. Shrinkflation refers to the practice of cutting product sizes while keeping prices the same. Biden's video sparked criticism from conservatives on social media. Shrinkflation has been a growing issue, with a report showing that household paper products were 34.9% more expensive per unit than in January 2019, and the price of snacks like Oreos and Doritos had gone up 26.4% over the same period. Some conservatives, including Elise Stefanik, criticized Biden's economic policies and called the video offensive. Biden offered no solutions or policies to address shrinkflation in the video. This comes as Biden has faced skepticism in voter polls, particularly regarding the economy.

One Biden Message That Could be Hurting Trump
==========
Polls suggest that Biden's message that a second Trump term would damage democracy is gaining traction with some critical voting groups. Concerns around democracy beat out other voter priorities, with 54% of Americans believing electing Trump would weaken democracy. A separate poll found that a slim majority of Americans think Trump is a threat to democracy. Biden's threats-to-democracy messaging contributed to Trump's relatively poor showing with moderate Republicans and independent voters in the New Hampshire Republican primary. However, Biden's overall job approval numbers are below 50% and he is trailing Trump in national and battleground state polls.

Boomers in Congress Are About to Outlaw Memes
==========
The ongoing bipartisan push in Congress to pass so-called 'AI fraud' legislation would severely curtail free expression online and potentially prohibit everything from South Park episodes to memes featuring famous people. The 'NO AI Fraud Act' recently introduced by Reps. MarĂa Elvira Salazar (R-FL) and Madeleine Dean (D-PA) implicates all sorts of digital expression and contains no sufficient carveouts for memes, humor, satire, parody, commentary, and other First Amendment protected activities. The bill creates financial penalties and legal liability for anyone who publishes, performs, distributes, transmits, or otherwise makes available to the public a digital voice replica or digital depiction without authorization. The term 'digital depiction' is defined so broadly that it includes any replica, imitation, or approximation of the likeness of an individual created or altered using digital technology. The bill could potentially prohibit and punish digitally created political cartoons, satirical AI videos, and South Park episodes that mock public figures. A coalition of groups committed to free expression, including the ACLU and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, has sent a letter to Congress highlighting the problems with the bill. The legislation could also jeopardize basic digital technology by regulating the distribution of 'digital cloning technology,' potentially inviting lawsuits against smartphones and other devices that allow users to edit video, images, and audio recordings. The article argues that much of the technology legislation being proposed is premature and duplicates existing laws that already prohibit harmful behavior. The article suggests that younger, more technologically literate people in Congress are needed to develop limited and narrow forms of AI regulation. The current approach by older lawmakers is seen as more focused on public relations and exploiting fear of new technology rather than on technological literacy and policy competence.

Putin's Pro-Peace Opponent Vows Push to Stay on the Ballot
==========
Boris Nadezhdin, a pro-peace Russian presidential hopeful, is vowing to continue fighting for a chance to appear on the ballot in March after the Moscow Central Election Commission (CEC) found flaws in over 15 percent of the signatures turned in alongside his application. Nadezhdin, a former member of the State Duma, has campaigned as a member of the Civic Initiative party and a principled opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his decision to invade Ukraine. He filed papers to officially challenge Putin in the election after collecting at least 100,000 voter signatures. The CEC is expected to make a final decision on Nadezhdin's application on Wednesday. Putin is anticipated to win reelection in March, with 51.1 percent of Russian voters saying he best represents their interests.

China's Chances of Overtaking US Economy 'Declining'
==========
The possibility of China overtaking the US as the world's biggest economy is declining, according to Cornell professor Eswar Prasad. Prasad stated that the US is likely to maintain its growth while China faces structural problems such as high public debt and a low birth rate. He mentioned that China's GDP overtaking that of the US is becoming less likely due to various fragilities, including undesirable demographics, a collapsing real estate market, deteriorating investor sentiment, and a lack of clarity over a new growth model. In contrast, the US economy has proven resilient, with a 3.3 percent growth rate in the last quarter of 2023 and the addition of over 350,000 jobs. China, on the other hand, has experienced a bumpy post-pandemic recovery due to factors such as an aging workforce, slower internal demand, and a crisis in the real estate sector.

US Presses Putin on His Idea of Demilitarized Zone in Ukraine
==========
The U.S. State Department has criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin's proposal for a demilitarized zone between Russia and Ukraine. The State Department spokesperson stated that it is difficult to implement a demilitarized zone when Russian forces are currently inside Ukraine. Putin's proposal involves moving the front line deeper into Ukrainian territory to create a buffer between the fighting and Russia's territory. The State Department spokesperson also noted that Putin's goals remain the same since launching the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which is to conquer and subjugate Ukraine. Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council secretary dismissed Putin's proposal and stated that a demilitarized zone will be established following the end of the war, but it will have different boundaries than those suggested by Putin. The article mentions that Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have not shown signs of readiness to discuss negotiations to end the war. Zelensky has stated that the war cannot end unless all territory is returned to Ukraine's control.

Home Buying Gets More Affordable in a Surprising Way
==========
Americans keeping their jobs and seeing their wages increase may put them in a stronger home buying position even amid elevated mortgage rates, some economists say. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that employers added 353,000 jobs in January, with earnings increasing by 0.6 percent for average hourly wages. The Federal Reserve is unlikely to cut rates in the immediate future due to elevated inflation, but may do so sometime in 2024. As hiring continues and wages improve, prospective buyers may be able to withstand high mortgage rates. The cost of buying a home rose by 5.4 percent in January, slightly above wage growth, but prices are increasing at a slower pace than in previous months. Affordability could further improve as inflation drops and the Fed begins to normalize monetary policy.

America Is Hiring, and That's Great News for Joe Biden
==========
Employers added 353,000 jobs in January, boosting Biden's standing ahead of the election. Biden has struggled to convince voters he is the best person to manage the economy, but the latest jobs data and economic growth in the fourth quarter could change that. Unemployment stood at 3.7 percent. Consumer sentiment is at its highest level since July 2021. Biden's policies have helped the economy recover from the COVID-induced crisis. The Federal Reserve's rate hikes have helped lower inflation without causing a recession. The economy is reaching a soft landing. Swing states show positive economic indicators under Biden's policies. Black voters are abandoning the Democratic Party.

Justin Mohn Was Angry He Couldn't Get Job as 'Overeducated White Man'
==========
Justin Mohn, a 32-year-old man who was arrested for allegedly decapitating his father, filed a lawsuit against the United States after he couldn't get a job as an 'overeducated white man.' Mohn graduated from Penn State University in May 2014 with a bachelor's degree in agribusiness management. In a lawsuit filed in August 2022, Mohn argued that he should get more than $10 million from the United States because his degree 'did not lead to better jobs or higher pay, but rather disadvantaged him because he was perceived as an 'overeducated, white male' and 'affirmative action' policies hurt his career chances.' This was the fourth time Mohn tried to sue the United States on the claims and all four have been rejected by the courts. Mohn later appealed the decision, but it was upheld by an appellate court. In a since-deleted YouTube video, Mohn blamed the Biden administration for the 'destruction' of the U.S. economy and criticized immigration policies. Mohn's father, Michael, was found dead in a Levittown home and Mohn was charged with first-degree murder, abuse of a corpse, and possession of an instrument of crime with intent.
