I'd argue it's currently within our technological capacity to wipe out most of all animal life on this planet. Sure, life would survive -- in the form of bacteria, fungi, and other microbes. But we really could kill ourselves.
I think it’s okay to have a human-centric morality. But also recognize that a positive future for humanity involves a stable ecosystem in which to live.
Pretty sure he's referring to the behavior of the population and not literally population control. In fact, no reasonable scientist even thinks we need population control. If anything, there's a lot more worry about global birthrates collapsing right now, and severe population decline before the end of the century.
