What privacy focused messangers do you use normally or recommend?

Which one do you think will be more used?

Signal? Session? Threema? Etc..

I watch whatsapp telegram nostr ... on the computer.But without the phone I couldn't link whasapp telegram to the computer and I couldn't use my bank on the computer (they always send sms).I wish I could get rid of the phone.

Threema has never made sense to me. It's too much of a pain in many regards. And I usually don't mind that, but isn't matrix/element just plain better?

Telegram and several others are e2e encrypted. Metadata is the only advantage of SimpleX. It has to work.

To each their own. Just sharing my experience. IMO the purpose of a messenger is to message. I was not consistently successful using SimpleX. Snail mail would’ve been more reliable.

Adoption is also a key factor. I was successful in getting my entire family and most of my friends on Telegram. That means 95% of my conversations are now e2e vs before when I had to SMS those same people.

Signal was the goto for a while, but it simply does not support the feature set. Telegram literally powers our video game chats, family coordination of events, etc. It’s been a flawless and painless experience - while maintaining a *reasonable* level of privacy.

In your analogy, SimpleX is like Fort Knox and Signal, Telegram, et al. are curtains and a hedge. 😛

But that’s why we’re free and have choice. TL;DR be prepared to have spotty notifications and only use your phone to message. If those are acceptable to you, then I would say SimpleX in every other way is pretty good.

Not everyone will use it, but it is necessary to know these tools because when the time comes you can help others to communicate privately.

In my case, I don't use WhatsApp, if someone is unable to install Signal to talk to me is that he doesn't deserve to talk to me.

FB today and IG tomorrow. WhatsApp deletion is a tad more difficult because my international friends don’t utilize Signal.

The thing is with Signal => it’s been conflicted out since at least 2019.

It's cool. Easy mistake. WhatsApp implemented the Signal Protocol in their app but as you said it's closed source. Their particular implementation also leaves metadata unencrypted. Signal itself is the most secure E2EE messenger around.

Messages are e2ee. There's no way to turn it off that I can see. The backups are held by Apple or Google. Maybe they're just using the meta data associated with your device and the things you search for on other apps.

Can someone explain to me like I'm 5 how Whatsapp makes money? Free. No ads. Encrypted backups. Most popular messenger in the world.
