A co-op-erating system for your community.

I understand the sentiment. And it’s totally worth pursuing.

In every community there are people who contribute at different levels (which could change over time). This creates an underlying currency (status, reputation, karma, …). The question is whether or not should we make it visible?

We don’t think that there is a good or bad answer to this, it’s highly depending on the community, what it does, its size, its context.

Our goal at Open Collective is to give communities the tools they need to operate in a transparent way towards their community.

It’s all opt in. It’s not for us to decide. We are just here to give you the tools you need to expose the currencies you want to expose. We started with petrodollars, but turns out there are many more currencies out there!

You are absolutely right.

You also don’t need Wordpress to start a blog.

The main reason to use a Ethereum for a community token is sharing a common open infrastructure to record transactions and —as a result— being able to tap into a large community of developers and apps that can interoperate.

Could Nostr be used to issue a community currency? I guess you could record the state of an ERC20 as a Nostr note. It wouldn’t be decentralized though as a single nsec would control the state.

What other ways are you thinking of?

There is more than bitcoin and zaps (as much as we absolutely love them).

Communities need to issue their own tokens to reward other types of contributions.

Yes those tokens are not worth much outside of the communities that create and use them.

Yes Bitcoin is “better money”. But that’s not the point.

We don’t need to replace the monoculture of a single fiat currency with the monoculture of a single crypto currency.

We need a permaculture of currencies.

We need Bitcoin. We need Ethereum. We need everyone.
