nostr:npub1vcl9kcqwwsk536z8s4h6k48qrfkm7mahzrk5mz0v04j94507d20s6hk6t3 My background with PHP tells me that just because something is server side rendered does not mean it is efficiently coded.
Or how much of these inefficiencies are written off as "the cost of cloud" cause they're CapX dollars instead of OpX, so we can just spend more money instead of making the code efficient enough to run on the hardware we otherwise might have purchased for way less money.
Ever wonder how much data center waste happens from massive Java servers running Java 6 because the apps were built against old libraries that don't exist anymore or aren't compatible with the app code anymore if it were upgraded, but it's OK because those boxes are behind a NAT and a web proxy now, so problem solved, right?
Ever wonder how much of that "bad battery life" on your phone or laptop is poorly coded javascript that "isn't worth fixing" because "modern devices have so much memory it doesn't matter anymore"?
Imagine the potential positive environmental impact change we could have if we all just fixed and optimized the terribly inefficient javascript libraries that so many websites and webapps use.
I've already done about 9 hours of driving this week and I'm content to not do that again for a while.

nostr:npub1ncmzqgkn45uul7uy0qmnwwee9jhvxegqcu6hfad3lfl9k2gs53gqepfsep I think a lot about how during the raspberry pi "shortage", it of it was the company prioritizing corporate shipments rather than to hobbyists, so brought the company to fame. Meanwhile, in the hands of those corporate customers who got priority on those Pi4B's everyone was trying to get...

At work, I do cool #Kubernetes things through CI/CD pipelines and such, but my home server is still just a basic LAMP stack that's been humming along since 2014 and I have no desire nor reason to change that.
Someone said, "I will be crazy when these things can also make realistic looking human faces."
So I shared https://this-person-does-not-exist.com and told them that they'd probably seen faces generated like this on fake social media accounts at some point before without realizing it.
I also shared that there are legitimate use cases for machine learning, such as modeling climate change or environment impacts based on actual research data, etc.

I was asked to explain "what the AI thing is all about" at a family get together this week. Everyone seemed to have a different, but very specific angle for what it is. I tried to briefly explain DALL-E and ChatGPT, distinguish them from other types of AI, talk about where it's been used in good, bad, and ugly ways, and the downsides (information quality, environment impact, lack of source attribution), etc. No idea how much will stick from it, but hopefully something.
