I don't want to give up on having some respect -- I think many may not be aware of just how lively and effective this place can be-- or how strongly some of us might feel about making a damn effort to break the model when it comes to social media.
It's a lot like how outside of planning circles people on the left often don't know much about density and public transit... but if they're for real if you take the time to explain it works.

I wonder if rationalization burns more or fewer calories than making a cold-hearted fair assessment...

Yeah... IDK-- I don't think this is a great take "we don't want you here anyways your too shallow" --?
There is a kind of "influencer" who would find this place useless but that isn't who I'm talking about at all-- and It's totally possible to do "broadcast" stuff here from an activism standpoint.
It's not like leftist youTubers love the algorithms (of big sites) or trying to game it. It's also kinda unkind to write them all off as showboater's who only want adoration.

Every. Social. Media. Site. Is. "Bad."
--it's not like there is some pure alternative. I'm as critical of each as anyone else-- But, to follow the lead of corporate media and aggressively ignore any activity that isn't a corporation and aimed towards making money is embarrassing. IMO.
It's perfectly typical for people to get arrested, or at least detained simply for being in the area where far less violent or consequential protests have occurred.
Nobody was arrested on Jan 6.
Does it make up for things, a little that people have been tracked down & charged? Yes-- but if there had been mass arrests that day a lot of people would have been swept up who didn't personally attack anyone or break anything.
Since the arrests are based on video, targeting the people who took the most violent actions, 100s of people were able to walk away.
That's fine IMO... except it's *not* how things "normally" work when crowd gets out of control.

Ballot Yes/No votes like these often have confusing wording so it's important when talking about them to make it very clear which way you prefer when talking to friends.
I think it's weird you think my post is threatening. It's phrased that way since it's been possible to vote for a few days and everyone I know from OH has already voted "No" --
I'm just a random grade-school teacher who grew up in OH.

She was being weird again today, though.

But these same people make collections at church for their sick community members. They help the neighbor kid fix his bike. There are social impulses at some level in most people (not all, but people with the deficit are evenly sprinkled through populations I think)
"Community" just doesn't include as many people, or people like us or something.
No one wants to be told what to do, but nearly everyone accepts some of it.

I remember it being controversial. Companies hadn't learned to use other aerosol methods. For a few years hair sprays really were "worse" or at least "different" --
I remember when "Aqua Net" went CFC free. Had this "pump" can that cost more & you had to pump it to make it spritz.
Vivd memories of being a science nerd kid explaining to everyone in the hairdressers shop why it was worth it. 🤣 Then they came out with a new way So we didn't even need to "adapt" that tiny bit.

I mean people threw away their Fila clothing ... and more recently Harry Potter merch. Though that was stuff they already bought.
I think every group of people has members who will throw a fit. And sometimes throwing a fit is good. It matters what one is throwing the fit about.
(Shooting Bud Light crates was pretty "cringe" as the kids would say... but that was a desperate politician trying to get attention. )
A similar issue is when people get angry that a vegan option simply exists.
Not: "We are no longer selling meat burgers." just "If you want, if you like, you can have this non-meat burger."
This makes a certain kind of person see red. It is just being reminded that meat has a greater impact? Is it a feeling of being judged?
I'm not vegan btw. I don't think I'll become vegan either.
Could it be that "shopping your way to a green planet" is toxic in more ways than just not being viable? 4/4
I think the people who feel angry about this stuff think it must be a scam in some way. Someone is getting rich.
With the electric stoves and masks its even more remarkable -- because the greatest impact is local. Your gas stove is putting particles in your lungs. Your mask makes you personally safer.
But being told to change maybe makes people feel stupid and looked down on?
Then when they don't listen liberals come right out and call you stupid and look down on you. 3/
I almost relate to the frustration at things being degraded. It's like "enshittification" -- or I think it must feel like what we'd call "enshittification" though the essence of functionally public "free" services getting worse has to do with greed. Someone is making my computer programs worse just to make a few pennies off of me and my data. The exploitation is what brings the anger.
Not making a hole in the ozone layer isn't like that. But I think many people don't see it this way. 2/
Trump gets a lot of millage complaining about:
- electric stoves
- meat alternatives
- low flow toilets and showers
- CFC free hair spray (he's still mad we fixed the ozone hole)
- LED light bulbs (which are objectively better than incandescent)
- masks
etc.
But it's not just one old man's weird fixation, he's people really relate to these complaints.
Some know-it-all do-gooder wants to lecture you, make you do something a little differently. It chafes. I almost understand-- 1/

I was thinking more of people trying to describe how big explosions are. And just ignoring that all those people died, more were injured and a city was destroyed.
OK last announcement.
If you live in *Ohio* you should have voted "no" by now. But, if you haven't you still have till the end of Aug 8th! Time to search up your poll site and get going!
(But, don't feel bad if this referendum caught you off guard, Ohio Republicans are hoping no one will show up to vote.)
Vote NO on issue 1. It's a strange constitutional amendment that changes the threshold to make it possible for a small group to veto everything. It's the only thing on the ballot.
If you are a US Army vet or if you know a US Army vet there is an important deadline coming up on August 9th to file for back benefits.
There is more information on the official VA site: http://va.gov/pact
This applies to vets of all ages including those without and with active service. Probably check it out before that deadline!
Can pop science writers, documentarians, and science show makers PLEASE stop using "the bomb at Hiroshima" as a unit of measure?
It's just unsettling and at worst sounds like the worst kind of jingoism (if the show is US made), at best tone deaf.
Use an atomic test, or Mt. St. Helen or Tunguska, or "tons of TNT" -- just anything else will do.
The worst is when it's treated like a plural noun. "200 Hiroshimas!" If could never hear that again it would be awesome.
