Exactly 4 years ago today, I sat in a company-wide meeting with a "crypto expert."

He said Bitcoin was useless beyond being digital gold — and some random altcoin called Polkadot was the future. Everyone thanked him for his wisdom. We were supposed to learn from "industry experts" to keep up with trends as early-stage venture investors.

I started digging deeper into Bitcoin and calling out altcoins as scams.

A senior partner pulled me aside and tore me down:

"Are we done here?"

"You have no track record."

"Your conviction is like a religious belief."

"You're being irrational and ideological."

He laughed when I said maybe the financial system is broken. From his perspective, he couldn’t see it — because he was making a fortune pumping startups that barely existed. The irony was lost on him: the very fact that so much money was being thrown at vaporware proved just how broken the system was.

Another partner called me a spruiker — said I was trying to pump my own Bitcoin bag to get rich and dump it on others.

It was hard to hold steady when surrounded by people who benefit from the status quo.

That day, I wrote in my journal: "As of today, I've decided to leave [this company]."

Four years later, Polkadot is down 90% against Bitcoin. And it’s been the best four years of my life.

I was just thinking today, that "Stay humble, stack sats." is most likely the best bitcoin quote of all times, at least for me. So simple, yet it captures the core of what bitcoin represents.

I lost one of my primary electrical clients. They said "we're only hiring natives when possible. Even if they cost more money". Just imagine this flipped around: no sorry, we only hire white people.

Nothing wrong with it imo, but you can only imagine if white people where openly doing this.

You guys are my people. Wish I had some of you irl.

It’s been about five years now since Swan Bitcoin opened their doors and started doing business.

In addition to successes, they ran into various frictions and controversies during that time due to limitations at their counter parties that they had to work through and upscale from, but at the end of the day, they have promoted self custody from the start, still do, and people can withdraw their sats safe and sound. They want you to, and you should, ideally.

Their vision from founding was that sats probably shouldn’t be on the balance sheet liability side of a startup (them) and instead should be in qualified custodians held in buyers’ names, to the extent that they’re not self custodied. They made it free to pull sats into self custody from the start and have a really high ratio of buyers pulling into self custody.

Cheers to them for being five years in operation and still working for their users.

When people are like “You should pull sats from Swan due to headline XYZ” Swan is like “headline XYZ is mostly wrong, here’s why, but yes you should pull sats from us, which we’ve been saying from the start!”
