, many in the free speech community saw Meta as the embodiment of the anti-free speech movement growing around the world.

Those files confirmed extensive coordination by the government with academia and social media companies to censor speech, including core political speech.

. In doing so, Meta adopted some of the changes Musk made at the newly named X.
Meta can be a gamechanger for free speech
For many, the Meta culpa seemed strained and opportunistic. However, I had the opportunity to have in-depth discussions with Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan about these plans. that, despite the bad blood with the company, the free speech community should give Meta a chance to prove that it was serious about restoring free speech protections.
As I stated in my column, we need Meta. Musk changed the trajectory of the fight for free speech, but the difference between the two companies is impossible to ignore. For free speech defenders, it is the difference between England’s entry into World War II and the United States’ entry. Musk slowed the progress of the anti-free speech movement. Zuckerberg could reverse the direction.
Recently, Kaplan and I reviewed the progress at Meta. He was remarkably transparent and candid about their efforts, and what I learned was heartening.
The chief global affairs officer stated that “we are allowing more speech,” but the company has not seen an explosion of hate speech as a result of greater tolerance for opposing views.
He admitted that “content was being taken down that should not have been taken down. We reduced over-enforcement.”
“We reduced the number of false positives by more than 50% without an explosion of prevalence,” Kaplan said.
“We track how many times our classifiers ‘get it wrong’ through labeling and human review.”
What he found was that “we had this blunt approach to reduce civic content in their feeds on Facebook and Instagram. We removed those and started treating political content like other content. We fundamentally changed how we treat content.”
Facebook is relying more on community notes rather than removal of postings, much like X. The company now has a massive number of community note contributors and a system designed to counter the most biased or strident posters.
The biggest change has resulted from modifying the company’s classifiers, the automated systems used to enforce policies. Meta found that these classifiers were too broad, resulting in excessive content being taken down. It turned off low-precision classifiers, except for illegal and high-severity areas ‒ like terrorism, child sexual exploitation, drugs, fraud and scams.
At the same time, Meta has implemented greater monitoring to track “false positives.” It was able to reduce the number of false positives by more than half without any significant increase in violating content. Now, in its https://transparency.meta.com/integrity-reports-q2-2025
, Meta shows that it has achieved an even more impressive mark in reducing over-enforcement, cutting enforcement mistakes in the United States by more than 75% every week.
The experience at Meta seems to confirm what some of us have long argued. Yielding to those who demand censorship only produces an insatiable appetite for more speech curtailment. It fuels a class of speech phobes, who spend more time trying to silence others than speaking their own voices.
Meta experienced this same snowballing of censorship. Notably, when the company moved to restore greater free speech protection, it did not experience a comparative rise in violative speech.
European Union poses biggest challenge to free speech
The greatest challenge, however, still lies ahead for the company. The European Union remains the greatest threat to free speech facing Americans. to force X to censor Americans.

Meta is clearly trying to find an accommodation with the EU, which may still object to its move to rely on community notes rather than direct censorship. The EU could also object to the reduction of broad classifiers in allowing a greater scope of discussion and dissent.

the EU about its efforts to censor Americans, Meta could help recreate a formidable alliance for free speech. For the first time, the free speech community might have a coalition of government and corporate allies that could stand up to the EU.
Hopefully, Meta will expand its notification to citizens in EU countries that they are being denied access to information due to “geoblocking” pursuant to EU censorship regulations. With a united front in the United States for free speech, we can serve as a bastion for those who value this human right.

However, it’s possible that he truly wants to restore free speech in social media. especially relevant in the current climate is her belief that the Canadian Anti-Hate Network (CAHN), a federally funded nongovernmental organization, has been involved in what she perceives as Antifa's targeting activity in Canada. Because Canada's Liberal government has directed nearly $1 million to CAHN, and because the group liaises with public safety agencies to disseminate its perception of extremist threats, Sa'd argues this has skewed the state's focus, overlooking the growing threat of violence from Antifa.

as a loosely aggregated, cell-like organization that transcends the U.S.–Canada border, operating simultaneously in online forums and in street collectives. These protests, she says, often coalesce under a "solidarity" banner that brings together activists for trans rights, Indigenous rights, migrant rights, encampment movements, safe-supply campaigns, and pro-Palestine demonstrations.

"If we think of Antifa as a movement, it's not, at least to my observation, like, 'here's your card, you're now a card-carrying member and please pay your dues,'" Sa'd explained. "It's more like a cell structure and there is both an online and a real-world component. It's organized regionally, but particularly the online aspect can be national and international. And Discord plays a huge part in this because it allows people to connect online in private servers."
Sa'd did not provide details of her investigations into the alleged targeting dossiers shared on Discord, but suggested her research grew out of her own experience of being targeted.
"The compiling of information on political targets could include social media handles, involvement in court cases, where they live, who their family is, what their connections are, and where they appear in public life," Sa'd said.
According to Sa'd, Anti-Hate had first approached her to collaborate on some research publications, "that never panned out."
"We couldn't agree to terms and that was fine. And a few months after that, I was the subject of an article that framed me as a fascist sympathizer. And, you know, it's only gotten worse since then."
Public records show that CAHN has received a total of $908,400 in federal funding across three agreements since 2020: $268,400 under Canadian Heritage's Anti-Racism Action Program; $440,000 under Canadian Heritage's Community Support, Multiculturalism and Anti-Racism Initiatives Program; and $200,000 from Public Safety Canada's Community Resilience Fund for a two-year project running from April 2024 to March 2026.
Sa'd said this funding is problematic because, in her view, CAHN "takes public money to put targets on private citizens."
"How I came to be interested, particularly in Antifa, is the Canadian Anti-Hate Network," she said. "It is an NGO that purports to document and fight against specifically far-right hate. And in having such a narrow focus, I think that has created almost a vacuum that has allowed the far left to metastasize."
She pointed to an Ontario court ruling that found CAHN had assisted the Antifa movement.
In the court case Sa'd cited, the judge accepted evidence that CAHN "did in fact assist Antifa" and acknowledged the movement's violent record. CAHN, for its part, denied supporting violence "directly or indirectly" or funding "violent Antifa."
Sa'd said she is concerned that the government's funding of CAHN has contributed to a skewed perspective among Canadian public safety officials.
"There is an ideological bent to what law enforcement is choosing to focus on," she said, arguing that federal intelligence and policing have over-weighted threats from the right while under-recognizing left-aligned street violence. She cited on-scene incitement at a Toronto protest following the Kirk shooting, in which a woman she classified as an Antifa-aligned activist told another person—"die fascist, one in the neck"—an evident reference to Kirk's shooting. The remark, captured on tape, drew little response from Toronto police, Sa'd said.
Tyler Robinson, 22, was charged yesterday with the aggravated murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in the shooting at Utah Valley University that Utah's governor, Spencer Cox, called a political assassination. Charging documents say Robinson, who had recently become engaged with left-wing politics and was dating a partner who was transitioning to female, decided to shoot Kirk because he believed Kirk "spreads too much hate," saying he had "had enough of his hatred."

Prosecutors allege Robinson planned the act over a week; after the shooting, he allegedly sent texts and Discord messages admitting his role. Among the most telling evidence, Cox said last week, were bullet casings inscribed with phrases including "Hey fascist, catch this" and references to the anti-fascist anthem Bella Ciao—a song that originated with Italian partisans resisting Nazi occupation in World War II and has since been adopted by Antifa-aligned groups in the United States, according to reports. FBI Director Kash Patel has since said dozens of Robinson's Discord contacts will be questioned as part of the investigation. Though an internal Discord review reportedly found "no evidence that the suspect planned this incident or promoted violence on Discord," Patel told Congress that investigators will examine members of the same group chat.

Sa'd described how Discord servers are tiered, with some rooms requiring special access. In exclusive spaces, she said, dossiers on political targets are shared.
"The information isn't always publicly sourced," she said, "which would suggest that some of the participants have access to information by virtue of being public servants or members of particular unions. And I don't say any of this lightly. In my travels, I've encountered people from various professions—teachers, professors, nurses, bureaucrats, lawyers, political staffers—who are involved in this movement."
Sa'd said both she and her clients have been targeted, and that police have shown a persistent reluctance to investigate what she described as "verifiable, documented" harassment and swarming. "There just doesn't seem to be an appetite to get to the bottom of this," she said.
While she stopped short of attributing direct foreign interference to fomenting protest movements in Canada, Sa'd noted that footage of Canadian unrest is often amplified by outlets from hostile foreign states, and that protest narratives sometimes pivot inorganically in ways consistent with outside influence. Her conclusion was blunt: Canada's institutions — from school boards to the Prime Minister's Office — are politicized and vulnerable to extremism, and "cleaning house" in Canada's approach to countering extremism is a prerequisite for restoring even-handed rule of law.

Utah prosecutors filed seven charges on Tuesday against 22-year-old Tyler Robinson in the political assassination of conservative thought leader Charlie Kirk nearly one week ago. They're seeking the death penalty.
The charges include aggravated murder, discharge of a firearm, obstruction of justice, and witness tampering. Prosecutors said Robinson's DNA was found on the rifle's trigger.
Here are the seven charges:
Count 1: Aggravated murder (capital offense)
Count 2: Felony reckless discharge of a firearm causing bodily injury
Count 3: Felony obstruction of justice for hiding the firearm
Count 4: Felony obstruction of justice for discarding the clothing he wore during the shooting

Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray told reporters earlier that he intends to seek the death penalty against Robinson. This means Robinson will be held without bail.
"I do not take this decision lightly, and it is a decision I have made independently as county attorney based solely on the available evidence and circumstances and nature of the crime," Gray said.
"Robinson's mother expressed concern to her husband that the suspect shooter looked like Robinson," and Robinson's father agreed, Gray said.

According to Judy Ganes, president of J. Ganes Consulting, the weather in Brazil is dry but not abnormally so. She told Bloomberg that the market is "on anxiety" because of separate weather concerns that may impact bean sizes.
While the latest U.S. Department of Agriculture report forecasts global coffee output at around 178.7 million bags in 2025–26, weather risks remain on analysts' minds. Ganes noted that the rally in coffee futures is being driven more by financial positioning and tariffs than by fundamentals.
"We should be seeing prices coming down unless there is some major issue with the flowering for the Brazilian 26-27 crop, and that story isn't written yet. Even with the couple of cold snaps, you could still wind up with a decent crop," Ganes said, adding, "To me, this is all financial, and it's being tripped up by the tariffs."

AfD Triples Support In Germany's Most Populous State, CDU & SPD Both Lose Votes
In the first major state elections since the new government, North Rhine-Westphalia went to the polls, with the Christian Democrats (CDU) coming out on top while the Social Democrats (SPD) crashed in support. Meanwhile, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) is now the third-strongest party in the state, more than tripling its support from the last elections.

The state, which has 14 million eligible voters, served as a major litmus test for the new government.
The CDU was the clear winner, earning 33 percent of the vote, compared to its 2020 total of 34.2 percent.
The AfD was seen as growing its support substantially, jumping to 14.5 percent of the vote, a clear jump from 5.1 percent in the last elections. However, the party actually received a higher share of the vote during the federal elections, meaning support for the party appears to be stagnating.
Nevertheless, the establishment views the AfD results as a worrying sign.
“This result should give us pause and cannot let us sleep peacefully,” said North Rhine-Westphalia Minister-President Hendrik Wüst, of the CDU, to the “Report from Berlin.”
The left-wing SPD was seen as one of the big losers, falling to 22 percent in what was once considered one of its heartlands. In 1994, the party received 42 percent of the vote.
The far-left Green Party also sunk dramatically, going from 20 percent to 13.4 percent.
The local elections could have implications for the federal coalition between the CDU and SPD. With the SPD losing votes, it could turn more sharply against the CDU, with the two parties already sharply clashing over judicial appointments.
The votes were for thousands of candidates, including those running for district councilor, mayor, districting administrators, and other positions.
However, a looming crisis has to do with the fact that a majority of municipalities are on the verge of bankruptcy. Only 16 out of 427 were able to put forward balanced budgets in 2024.
A number of run-off votes will also be taking place on Sept. 28. The CDU and SPD are combining forces to block AfD candidates. For the first time, the AfD will be in mayoral run-offs, including Norbert Emmerich in Gelsenkirchen, who scored 29.8 percent of the vote. However, he is far behind the SPD opponent, Andrea Henze, who received 37.1 percent of the votes.
In many of the other races, the AfD candidate appears to have little chance of victory.
NRW woes
Unemployment is growing in the German state, with 800,000 jobless reported in August. Bankruptcies are also growing, jumping to 3,190 in the first half of 2025, a 17.2 percent increase.
The AfD is still celebrating its results. Party co-leader Alice Weidel celebrated on X, writing it was a “great success.” However, the actual totals for the AfD turned out to be slightly less than exit polls initially predicted.

The AfD, however, continues to grow in strength in the east of the country. Furthermore, new polls show the party hitting close to 20 percent in Bavaria.
The party will still need to boost its support to close to 20 percent in North Rhine-Westphalia and other Western states if it ever hopes to secure the support of 30 percent of voters nationwide, one of its key goals. If it ever manages to secure such a voting share, it would make forming coalitions without the party at the federal level nearly impossible.
