Your wallet either supports Lightning or has no future.

We're thrilled to announce that Mutiny Wallet beta is now available to everyone. Getting started with Lightning has never been easier.

https://blog.mutinywallet.com/mutiny-wallet-open-beta/

What is Mutiny? It's the first self-custodial lightning wallet that runs on the web, putting the control of your funds in your hands.

Mutiny is about breaking barriers. We're solving the onboarding problem for Bitcoin, regardless of who you are, where you live, or what device you're using. There's no need to provide identity to a regulated institution, making Bitcoin accessible to 5 billion global browser users

But our mission doesn't stop there. We aim to make the experience as user-friendly as possible and provide unique features not seen before. Our position allows us to experiment with new concepts and we can't wait to share some of these with you.

At the heart of our application are the building blocks built off Block's Lightning Development Kit (LDK) project. A new Lightning library that's fine-tuned for customization, LDK even allows us to compile it for the web - a task that was impossible until now.

We understand that managing liquidity is a challenge. That's why we've partnered with Voltage to be the main Liquidity Service Provider. With Flow 2.0, which we helped develop, new Mutiny users to receive their first Lightning payment within seconds of opening the app.

We've decided to separate the balance between your funds in Lightning channels and funds for on-chain spending. While it introduces a little more complexity, our trade-off ensures users are always in control.

Just like many Bitcoin wallets, your seed words secure all your funds on Mutiny. We've taken it a step further by adding encrypted & remote storage for restoring your latest Lightning-related data.

We've also integrated Nostr Wallet Connect, a social tipping feature. It allows you to request payments from your wallet, tip users, and more. Future iterations will enable automatic payments under a certain amount specified by you.

We're also introducing Mutiny+, our first subscription feature built on top of NWC. You'll get a payment request from Mutiny to renew your subscription each month. The control is in your hands, money will only leave your wallet once you accept the payment request.

While we're launching the beta for everyone, we're aware of a few bugs. We're working hard to iron them out, but please bear with us. For now, treat Mutiny as a "spending" wallet, like cash in your pocket.

Our goal is to make the wallet experience normie ready over time and make it a reliable tool for all. We encourage you to test the wallet, let us know your thoughts. We're dedicated to fixing bugs quickly and shipping new features.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. If you test out the wallet, please let us know what you think. Stay tuned as we continue to push the envelope in making Bitcoin more accessible to everyone.

Why would a happy Phoenix user switch to Mutiny?

Thoughts on #nostr.

Nostr is a websockets-based text protocol for logs of authenticated (but unauthorized) tagged (and otherwise unstructured) messages stored at public relay servers. The rest is a specific nostr application (like social networking or payments) on top of it.

Nostr takes several decisions on possible tradeoffs, which I try to analyze here:

1. Websockets. Good: pub/sub data access, web-integratable. Bad: high load on relay servers limiting scalability. Verdict: ⚠️

2. Elliptic curve (secp256k1) for identities. Good: bitcoin-based. Bad: very low performance, not GPG/SSH compatible, sidechannels. Overall: ❌.

3. Signature scheme: BIP-340 Schnorr. Good: batch verification, standard. Bad: optimized for onchain, discarding y coord, making verification ~50% more expensive than non-BIP Schnorr. Verdict: ⚠️

4. Hashing function: SHA256. Good: standard, bitcoin. Bad: slower than BLACKE3. Verdict: ⚠️

5. Text JSON encoding. Good: easy to implement. Bad: hard to pass & slow to encode/decode non-text/binary data; no limits on data sizing opening a door for DoSing relays and clients. Verdict: ❌

6. No authorization scheme. Good: easy to implement. Bad: limits use cases, limits scalability. Verdict: ⚠️

7. No encryption on the transport level, relying on TLS. Good: easy to implement. Bad: centralized, not end-to-end. Verdict: ⚠️

So I see most of selected tradeoffs by Nostr as a bad or poor decision. This us arguable of course.

Can Nostr survive and success? For sure, if even much worse systems had done that in the past (Ethereum, JavaScript, PHP).

What is the greatest Nostr weakness? Limited scalability and possible DoS (not even DDoS) attacks.

If I were the one who did nostr, what I would had made differently? I would had used Ed25519 signatures on Ristretto25519 (speed), binary encoding with strict limits on data sizes, use Noise_XK encryption - and provide bridges to Websockets only when they are needed for the web. But we have what we have.

HelloBleb. I could contribute, but you would have to convince me whats the unique value proposition of new wallet cos there already is a looot of wallets and besides ambitious goal to be on all and every platform, what something Bleb brings other wallets dont?
