Good morning! I am about to execute **Life Hack 6102-F: Pay bills with Fold and get bitcoin back**. *May the gambling odds ever be in my favor.*

**What am I doing?**

I use a rewards credit card to purchase *everything*. Then, once a month, I pay the full credit card bill off via my Fold debit card. I get bitcoin back for things that I would normally have to buy and I also earn other rewards. It's a win/win.

**How do you do it?**

I use PayPal's bill pay feature. I have my [Fold debit card](https://use.foldapp.com/r/DEREKROSS) setup in PayPal. I use PayPal to find and add my bills. I pay the bill with PayPal and set PayPal to use my Fold debit card for that transaction. PayPal then debits my Fold card and I get bitcoin back!

**How much do you get back?*

Well, that depends. You can get a flat 1% back or you can gamble a bit and spin a wheel of random opportunities. Generally speaking, if you have enough spins available, you can get 2% back or sometimes more if you're really lucky. I generally try to have ~10 spins available for paying large bills. That *almost* guarantees 2%. (I was able to get 3% back on my mortgage last week.)

**Fold sucks!**

Yes. Fold's rewards and gamification efforts have declined. They keep changing their rules and modifying how *the game* works. I fully agree, I hate it, and it's annoying. That said, until something better comes along that is going to give me ~500K sats back every month for things I have to do anyways, then I'm going to continue to use this.

I am excited to see what Strike offer's when they launch their [debit card](https://invite.strike.me/OL0N3F). Maybe they'll give a more flat rate in rewards and you won't have to play these games? Who knows?

Nice one. Never thought about the PayPal thing. I guess I figured they would try to extract a % that made it not worth it. I’m fortunate enough to be able to pay my mortgage by debit and it feels like the ultimate life hack getting bitcoin back on that.

I would love to see the bottom bar become something like episodes, shows, explore (combine home and search) and profile (combine profile and wallet). Just a rough idea, but I also would love easier access to my subscribed shows

Yes! I know I installed pkg-config at some point to deploy to pypi. I thought it was after installing secp256k1, but not totally sure. Was unsure if it was an intel vs M1 Mac issue, but I also ran into dependency issues trying to install on an Ubuntu vm yesterday with additional dependency issues.

Haven’t looked into it, but wondering if smothering like this could solve dependency issues for people like us who are just trying to get an environment running and don’t car as much about keeping dependencies to a minimum

Sounds good! Let me know if you run into any issues. I’ve also run into secp256k1 install issues, but I want to make this into something that’s accessible for anyone trying to learn about nostr. Lots of packages like python-nostr will no doubt be better foundations for developers building tools.

I’ve got a bunch of stuff built on top of python nostr in this GitHub repo if you haven’t seen it. Still trying to get the install ironed out, but `pip nostrfastr` should get you most of the way there and the even if not the code is accessible via notebook. Hopefully it’s helpful! https://armstrys.github.io/nostrfastr/

FYI here is how I installed approached it in python. You may be able to pip install this, but I might still need to add a couple pip dependencies.

It was a bit slower than some numbers I’ve seen from rana, but I’m running on a 2015 MacBook. Want to run some testing soon.

I have some basic testing tools here - was also assuming random distribution of characters

I don’t know that it’s priority #1, but last I saw it’s still something that quite a few devs want to get tested and implemented

The only way I’ve been comfortably using the current DM spec is on burner accounts and sending DMs to itself. Useful for automation, but not actually useful until we have clients that can manage multiple accounts. Hopefully we will get a new DM spec soon.

They got the post button right this time! 😂 I do like contrast of the blue, but it definitely gives Twitter vibes

Yeah I really should do that. Probably time to buy a second even if one of the cheaper ones. I was so stoked the day I could completely replace Google Authenticator with the Yubikey NFC Authenticator. I think a lot of people don’t know that exists

I need to explore a lot of that. Am I correct that you can’t actually duplicate a yubikey? You have to register the backup with all those sources too? That’s the only thing keeping me from buying a second tomorrow - though I probably should.

What are your favorite ways to use yubikeys? I use them for Yubico Authenticator and a few websites, but not in many other ways

No mine is displaying two extra slashes. The backslash is supposed to escape in markdown, but when I type a single backslash I get 0 and when I type 2 I get two. It looks like another post found that you can correct it by no doing any escapes and just wrapping in backticks
