Ah, that's what they were called. I was off by a decade and a half, lol

Is linux pretty happy on that hardware?

nostr:npub1l3gpk6vrudg8r67swqlex5alv9ch59s4lw46kk6hekuxe2n3aczsyqvu48 as desktop I have used https://www.gnucash.org/ . It really covers all the basic needs (accounting software must be rigid, and this is often reflected in the interfaces...).

You can share the file, nextcloud or whatever service, but is not multiuser.

That's the granddaddy of them all.

It's also what Linux Weekly News ended up with.

Unfortunately, it might not be the right solution for my needs, as it may have some limitations in the area of data import (from benighted QuickBooks) and check printing formats.

I'm looking into it some more. :)

w3m most of the time, sometimes xlinks when I want to see images.

w3m does support images, but it's pretty flaky and flickery. xlinks is x11, so it works much better.

w3m has much more flexible keybindings, though. That's what I love about it.

Yep, I use it every day. :D

I even have a script called "duck" which tries to pick the best text-based browser and converts your search to a DDG url. :)

That reminds me, I need to update my git repo with the latest changes to my little medley of scripts

Hey #AskFedi,

I'm thinking of writing an article about browsing Web 1.0 in the modern world (i.e., no JS, sometimes no CSS, sometimes no graphics at all).

Do any of you guys use online services that work well without JS?

Care to share for my post? :D

Y'all are amazing #FediFriends <3

nostr:npub1l3gpk6vrudg8r67swqlex5alv9ch59s4lw46kk6hekuxe2n3aczsyqvu48 I mean it's not *that* bad if you have some experience. Then again, that's why VPS providers exist.

Most of my experience is in self-hostable though, I'm not one to trust data like my finances to some other company or provider that could go bankrupt overnight (ironic I know)

Yeah, this is another area where my very siloed IT experience bites me in the butt.

I just don't have the general experience to maintain a web application server.

I *do* have enough Infosec experience to not trust container images... Who knows what's in those things?!? Who knows if it's getting regular security updates? Does anybody really inspect them?

It's a massive security disaster waiting to happen.

Akaunting is looking pretty good. It's FOSS, and you can either self-host it or buy a subscription (pretty competitive pricing, from what I've seen)

Now that I've gotten pretty comfortable with Vimium C on Firefox, I'm not as dead-set against using web-based accounting (except for the lingering security concerns)

nostr:npub1l3gpk6vrudg8r67swqlex5alv9ch59s4lw46kk6hekuxe2n3aczsyqvu48 I wonder if anything in the awesome selfhosted list works?

I assume you already checked though.

I'm wary of self-hosting.

Self-hosting nextcloud, I can consider. Self-hosting business accounting?

I'm shook. XD

nostr:npub1l3gpk6vrudg8r67swqlex5alv9ch59s4lw46kk6hekuxe2n3aczsyqvu48 Like 99% of that could be Firefly III (https://www.firefly-iii.org), self-hosted, web-based, complete with mobile app on F-Droid, just no auto reconcilliation and check printing.

Let me poke around.

nostr:npub17j5xgxhtskpcp0kjd9ldjhm3w6ggns7kkvfp44lk4qsrdwawmjeqvd0ny5

Thanks. Unfortunately, the check printing is still pretty important for our business.

nostr:npub1l3gpk6vrudg8r67swqlex5alv9ch59s4lw46kk6hekuxe2n3aczsyqvu48 I've never found anything here that seems adequate. (I'm not an accountant, either.)

An in-between, a Linux-supporting but not FOSS local app that seems to be good, is Moneydance.

I like it.

This verse used to confuse me until I realized Jesus was talking about ritual uncleanness, not food-borne illness/viruses/parasites ;)

Or anyway a start on that use case. My non-technical spouse uses it..

I'll check it out, but I do worry about the high mutability of text files. They're terribly useful for most things, and I use todo.txt (plus some script/plugins and a few of my own front-end bash functions for extra sugar), so I do love CLI and plain text stuff, but having all my business accounting in plain text gives me pause.

That may or may not be a rational fear. ;)

nostr:npub1dalxqsc5dkqsg3n86vjev90wvhswlt76dqzqdu5hy6em0clwdlcsh3n75t

Added it to my list, but it might not be the right solution for me as I'm looking more for plain accounting, reports, and check printing than invoices.

I've been refining the text of my original post to be more clear along those lines. ^___^
