Some people prefer the fdroid version to avoid any contact with Google. You will lose translations but also notifications as notifications are done by Google.
To answer your question, the Google play version will detect languages of all posts and translate to your local language. You can turn of the translation on a "per language" basis but it will still detect the language.
Personally I find it pretty awesome that the whole world can communicate with each other irrespective of their language!

NWC is such a "killer app" for nostr and lightning. Custodial is great for onboarding new users to this complex eco system. They can transition to self custodial when they are ready for it.

It's surprisingly difficult finding an up to date list like this!
I asked because it's one of the main questions I hear from new users. "What wallet should I use" and I believe nwc setup is the best user experience.

I don't know.. Were you using the internal primal wallet?
If yes then you probably can't use it outside primal.
If you were using some other external lightning wallet you can just use it with #Amethyst.
Nostr Wallet Connect wallets are the most convinient as they allow one click zaps from nostr clients that support nwc (like amethyst).
I don't know much about lightning on desktop and I don't know what lightning wallet you are using π
NWC is a nostr wallet protocol. Ideally you would find a desktop client and a wallet that supports nwc (alby hub does).
As a second option you would need a desktop lightning wallet. Then the desktop nostrudel should open the lightning wallet on your PC.
