nostr:npub1prejkjnul0q2gvpkgacm7nvyv2d4nadh5h08r2y9g45l4dmwnewsh799k7 It's a good question, and I think points to another important point: the over-use of “AI”. If a system can't learn, it's not machine learning.
nostr:npub16u7alxzkjugh6535altqqk5gx7g0a63x6m300l898nenys0rsjuqguuend Absolutely not trusting of MS. But neither am I going to dive in and *assume* that a tech works in a particular way without that tech being in my (and more qualified others) hands.
People: "Machine learning needs to be entirely local and controlled by the user, not done in the cloud!”
Microsoft: “Here's a machine learning system that's entirely local and controllable by the user”
People: "Not like that".
(Snarky comment, but a serious point: machine learning *should* be local, not cloud based, and it *should* be controllable by the user. This *can be* useful tech. Do I trust MS to do it “well enough”? Nope. Is it still a step forward that it can be done? Yep.)
nostr:npub1vg3pzw7vy669d57hczed0ssfgs3rcxvnuhkcjrl328hcme76u0fqn3fvc9 yeah, totally. Anything which uses even basic machine learning algos is now “AI”.
nostr:npub154qfhr8r8qgdffypfl0jydk8ufrcmtrpam2ey6h5hzppg7s0u3ksa2evek Yup. "What’s our AI strategy?" is the new “what's our Blockchain strategy?”

nostr:npub12znh2qvaf0w4sm83s4500prwdw05gkmrpg48ea8xcf9jmd4slx6qmrz0zw I am looking forward to someone doing this.
nostr:npub1y30gjdj2n403070xawncq4swm8n9k7srkh04dzwfvrx5ghjej6qs82ja63 WELL... not if you talk to the youth, who all thing LLMs when you say "AI”
The funny thing about Microsoft's new Recall feature is how little actual "AI" it's doing. It's basically just making automatic screen captures, then running OCR and image recognition to create a semantic index you can search. Unless I'm missing something, there's no LLM (or small language model) used in it. Maybe in parsing queries?
I’m sure that Nick Bostrom’s move from AI doomer to “maybe AI is going to save us” has absolutely nothing to do with AI making a lot of money for people who he wants to fund him.

I wonder: In a world where people fighting for democracy are hacked and e2ee is under attack for everyone; a phone that can easily and invisibly be part swapped is a liability. Furthermore, while WSJ’s Big Hack was probably bullshit, the practice of tainting parts is not nonsense. I understand wanting complete control over the chain. How can you trust a recycled part?
Sure, Apple wants to make money, but isn’t that answer just too simple?

The reality is if a government-scale operator wants to access your phone, it probably can, and having to actually disassemble it isn't required.

They will take the cheapest part they can get to be competitive and make as much money from the repair. Furthermore anyone with a little time can learn to do these repairs and you end up a hyper competitive market where the customer suffers. This ends with what happened to Dan and myself. Apple part is € 180, we can do it for €109. You a get a non-oleophobic, sunglasses-funky, replacement that looks the part on the surface.

Apple deliberate prevents this happening by literally shredding the phones. This limits the amount of genuine parts available at low prices. It also uses "part pairing" to prevent genuine, working parts being used. These practices directly lead to a lack of availability of genuine parts for repair. That is not forgiveable, in my book.

nostr:npub1nu968lpe4mqdkjzurvz00e70yfdyqypay2q2xrr2ae9h4eljxcjqykl6r5 The horrible thing is that you know it's the tip of the iceberg.
WatchOS 10 has a lot of really interesting changes to it. But most important of all? There's a Snoopy watch face. This is me, stuck with an Apple Watch now till the end of time.
nostr:npub1yyx7sllvsrr0fauh2rdlqk5rakf3963g9xk4a7j5uhfcs00lr3kq42qa5g Maybe something to do with the exchange rate - the British pound gets 10% more than it did a year ago?

nostr:npub1jtm4dxvu3ccgk60wvvt0uw9j9vz7nuc80f7agrv0vgkkushxk5zq0rrxtn Quite possibly, but Apple is usually very conservative with exchange rates.
