nostr:npub1f9llyafdclhtt29w8ctyh00wltnkhfmggy9fh2unfhzter0p5adql0782z yes, you can use email addresses from any modern email service that provides a certain level of security. Just make sure you use a *dedicated* address. Using email addresses that are simultanously used by non-chatmail clients are not supported, however. In prior times we tried to make it work but it detrimental to security outcomes and easily gets confusing for users. So email addresses are fine but need to be dedicated for chatting via chatmail clients.
We are impressed with the new https://fightchatcontrol.eu/ website, and the way it provides all the info needed to engage in distributed diverse action to prevent the EU from preparing the ground for, or sliding into, authoritarianism by breaking end-to-end encryption for everyone. Germany and France are particularly important to engage with and we'll see what we can do from our circles. We don't know the people behind https://mastodon.social/@chatcontrol but big kudos!
#chatcontrol
#DeltaChat evolved according to needs of people under repression and continues to do so. The more ignorant and exchangeable we make #chatmail relays, the less their operators have to worry. Having metadata-less, fast and cheap instant messaging relays, that can also operate when 99% of the Internet vanishes in a region, is a key goal. Some way to go still but, already now, is there any other real-world solution that provides better service in internet-repressed regions in 2025?
Some people in #Iran successfully use delta with national email providers when outside Internet is cut.
#deltachat designs are #OfflineFirst using delay tolerant protocols. Messages are queued when a path is blocked. email servers are made for this and run at planetary scale.
Messages crossing the border may arrive three days later but they arrive.
Peoples can stay in private touch across time and space, to the extent possible in current breakdown times. Which is what delta is about.
nostr:npub1dvjm54lq5j8sr0g9wqw9twkh8asp5zwe457mp64nqj8fr25atnhsejn50q sure, moving people to #signal is an improvement over Whatsapp meta! But we are trying to establish and nurture a decentralized ecosystem to replace Whatsapp, not just aiming to become the one dominant replacement. Its hard precisely we can't easily monetize anything, by very design. We are in a very different game than #signal which expressly is against federation and believes in running a single central player on big dominant internet US platforms remains the way to go.
nostr:npub1dvjm54lq5j8sr0g9wqw9twkh8asp5zwe457mp64nqj8fr25atnhsejn50q sure if you onboard alone then it's lonely -- most people succeeed by onboarding family or a friend's group. Delta is not yet at the point where lots of other people have it, but it's very well usable for small groups, and you get tools and games via "attach app" action into any chat.
nostr:npub12yjx63apyz4hpjnyggx6hssxrx4qtw5uaxw42wme4hd6tc72rcssvc3l94 several of us know sprints very well and participated in the first ones 25 years ago. Combined around 50 if not more of them. But this gathering is not just a sprint. Our practices have evolved :)
Tomorrow our ten day #DIFF gathering in Freiburg in the black forest starts. Around 40 people from various projects, contexts and countries are joining ... And would you believe it? There is no date/clock scheduling to speak of, no hour slots etc
On Friday the 13th we might do live streaming sessions with talks and demos but the focus generally is on in-person hanging out and work, in a relaxed manner. Its still possible to join if you are of the spontaneous kind https://delta.chat/en/2025-05-12-diff-invitation
Last week four new #chatmail relays popped up from four different continents from four different entities.
Permission-free interoperability based on #cryptography ... That's how we like it and how it generally is with the email system: separation of transport and apps. App developers can't access messages, and relay operators can not break e2ee encryption. Fwiw May 14th there is another round at a #Moscow court where our lawyers will convey this impossibility for #deltachat to hand over data.

#deltachat ist a community messenger much more than a monetary focused enterprise. Its offspring developments, the growing #chatmail and #webxdc efforts are also community grounded.
Is there any other cross-platform FOSS messaging project, implementing #RightToExit on many levels, putting all interesting and sensitive computation and interactions into end users devices, constantly and radically denying centrality/control of billionaires and big-tech, to the extent currently possible?
Despite not having a lot of money we are yearly subscribed to give 300eur to the #foss #forejo platform of nostr:npub1kzk9pnwftlas9zt2kwmklw82anvtt05kck5qeey4f5thr4u2vr3slxk9tq who are currently suffering sustained network and abuse attacks https://social.anoxinon.de/@Codeberg/113995906071458932
Some of our #webxdc developments takes place on Codeberg. Thanks for persevering! #hugops

nostr:npub12acpr4fwdkh00c4rg4rwu246a8mw4j6garvk0xzctew0zfrp5s0qpa3xqe we corrected the original top post because the toot/thread is still actively shared.
"but e-mail !1!!!" Is probably still a number one objection from experts and power users who refuse to fathom that e-mail protocols are a viable option for instant messaging even if it demonstrably works, is fast and secure :) We'd be happy if someone engaged in a proper comparison with xmpp and matrix specs and impls, really the only three messenging protocols deployed and implemented at scale. (Can't compare that with Signal or WhatsApp which don't have wire specs!). https://github.com/deltachat/deltachat-core-rust/blob/main/standards.md
How many people do you know that have lost their messaging history on Whatsapp or Signal, photos etc during mobile phone transitions or breakage or through other shenenigans?
With #deltachat you can:
- export "everything" to a file and import it on any of the many different devices
- or just setup a second device through a QR code scan -- which was happily discovered here after an accidental factory reset https://libranet.de/display/0b6b25a8-2066-0695-ca24-081964494389
Reclaiming Peer-to-Peer Web technology with #webxdc out of the ashes of "Web3": our 2024 opening post on the topic :) https://delta.chat/en/2024-02-15-webxdc-m3
Psst: we are looking for more folks experienced with Web app development with a knack for P2P technology ....

nostr:npub1rypttp9t6g4ntj8hfl8cusumdunnn2teulf8atm8yp8cjrhznzvqezf6xs there is some interesting work around replacing mapbox with leaflet but not really a big push for location streaming capabilities
