Absolutely.
I grew up Mormon/Latter-day Saint, but started waking up to the truth about it about a year ago, so I'm not a Mormon anymore. Mormons have a similar belief, but of 3 degrees/levels in heaven, and it's similarly destructive:
- The Telestial Glory: For those who were liars, thieves, adulterers, etc, but who nevertheless fought on God's side against Lucifer before the Earth was created. They can abide the presence of the Holy Ghost, but not of Jesus or of the Father (who are 3 separate beings, but perfectly united, according to Mormons' interpretation of the Bible and other books they consider scripture). This glory is metaphorically comparable to the brightness of the stars (they often refer to 1 Corinthians 15: 40-41 for this stars, moon, and sun metaphor).
- The Terrestrial Glory: For those who believed in Jesus and never committed major sins, but weren't valiant in following Him. They can abide the presence of the Holy Ghost and of Jesus Christ, but not if the Father. This glory ismetaphorically comparable to the brightness of the moon.
- The Celestial Glory: For those who valiantly lived and sacrificed for God the Father and Jesus Christ, and held nothing back. They can abide the presence of the Holy Ghost, of Jesus Christ, and of the Father, and will continue to grow in light, knowledge, wisdom, power, and general godliness forever. This glory ismetaphorically comparable to the brightness of the sun.
They say that these are 3 degrees of Heaven, but what I realized while falling down the rabbit hole away from Mormonism that the first 2, along with the level of no glory, called "Outer Darkness", are actually 3 levels of Hell. Because anything less than living and growing eternally in the presence of God, and inheriting all that He has, is Hell. One either accepts Jesus as their Savior and cast all their sins upon Him or they don't. So any levels for those who choose not to would be levels of Hell, not of Heaven.
So, to your point, and John Calvin's, the doctrine of degrees of glory is also a deadly fiction of Satan's which nullifies the cross of Christ.

My family and I just got back from Christmas carolling. The love and appreciation felt by our neighbors was palpable! One old man tearfully told us that he didn't think anyone did things like that anymore, and our surprise visit to his doorstep gave him more hope for the future.
Whether or not you've gone Christmas carolling before, I highly recommend it!
