I am an applied mathematician by degree but most of my math work has been as a teacher at a supplemental learning center focused on math and critical thinking. Most math teachers have a limit to their scope of mathematical expertise as teachers, i.e. 3rd grade teachers really only need to be masters of 3rd grade level math while being cognizant of what to expect coming out of 2nd grade and what 4th grade teachers expect to come into 4th grade. I taught all ages so I had to master pretty much everything up through high school level stuff.

That said, most of my stuff applies to learning grade school and high school level math. If someone wanted their kid to be bad ass at math, they could do a LOT worse than having me shadow and teach the kid. The track record doesn't lie. My students won awards in increasing quantities each year they competed.

I have a lot of mental math tricks. I look at etymology and morphology and use that to help students understand. I work narratives into my teaching. I lean heavily upon the Socratic Method.

I haven't taught in a while though. I've been working as an engineer. I still don't use a ton of high level math for that though.

Treasure Island

By Robert Louis Stevenson

This book was fun to read and I now understand why this has become a classic.

The story is pure adventure and the characters come alive on the page. Stevenson set the bar on creating pirates and it seems everyone since has followed his lead.

Some of the pirate language is a little bit hard to understand but you get the gist of it and it lends an air of credibility to the story.

It starts a little bit slow but stick with it as once it picks up it doesn’t stop.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one!

Incidentally Robert Louis Stevenson made the term pieces of eight famous, which set me to wondering.

Another term for a part of a piece of eight was a bit… or bits o’ coin.

Is Satoshi a Treasure Island fan? Is the term bitcoin a nod to RLS?

In Tom O’Neill’s book Chaos: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties we learn about Reeve Whitson, a CIA agent disguised as a hippie. He was a close friend of Sebring, Tate and Polanski. He also knew Charles Manson. He had advance knowledge of the murders at the Tate house, because he had the house under surveillance. He was at the Tate house after the murders were committed but before the police arrived. Whitson was the one who coerced Hatami to cooperate with Bugliosi during the investigation. He threatened Hatami with deportation back to Iran if he did not cooperate. He not only helped Bugliosi, but he also gave much help to Paul Tate during his private investigation of his daughter’s death.

O'Neill's information on Whitson provides strong support for the proposition that military and intelligence agencies were involved in the Tate LaBianca murders, bringing the CIA’s Phoenix program of assassination and torture of Vietnamese non-combatants home to America. The purpose behind the plot was to incite terror among white people and put the blame on black radicals.

We will plant a new one in its’ place, but it will take time

Today is kind of a sad day. We have been blessed to have inherited a very old avocado tree. We have enjoyed it for years, but these last 2 years it has appeared to be slowly struggling.

We have consulted arborists and followed their recommendations and spent a lot of time and money to try to save this tree.

Turns out, it is infested with termites. Initially, it appeared to be just one of the limbs which we chopped, but the pest people discovered that it is essentially completely infested and therefore has to be removed from our property.

It will be missed, but will leave behind space for more opportunities of growth.

Ha, will let you know, but taking betting tips is usually a good way to separate from your sats! Gotta DYOR!
