I'm not sure, but my town has an annual Robo Brawl event (presumably the name BattleBots is copyrighted). They're not as big as battle bots, but some of the people who built battle bots are there showing off their 300 lb monsters.

This is one of the benefits of living in a college town with a strong engineering program. 🙂

OpenGarage is an open source device that can add intelligence to any garage door opener

Apart from this device being able to connect via Home Assistant to provide all the intelligence, what I really like is that it just attaches to most existing dumb garage door openers. Most door openers have two connectors intended to wire to a switch on the wall to open or close the door (many installations never have such a wall switch fitted, but usually the openers have that ability already). If that fails, you can still connect this directly to a spare remote control.

The other clever thing comes in with the positioning of the device so that both the car is below it, and the garage door when it is in the fully open position. The ultrasonic sensors are able to measure the distance to the floor, the car roof, or the garage door when it is open. That distance then indicates accordingly whether the garage is empty of the car (you are out and the door is closed), whether the car is inside and the door is closed, or whether the door is open.

It seems the easy way to use this remotely would be to use OpenGarage's cloud service with the token, but means depending on that service being there. The other way is to rather connect and manage it from Home Assistant running on your home network, which will give you full control over it - this is a little more complicated but can also offer you even more automation based functionality.

The device costs about US$50, but wait, there is more... It could also be repurposed quite easily for doing similar things with say water tank levels, where the relay could activate or deactivate a pump for example. So, don't think of this as only for garage doors.

See I, too, installed an open source garage door opener, and I’m loving it

There’s more than one garage opener with a not-quite-open ecosystem. That’s why an Ars writer installed an OpenGarage unit.

Such a great writeup and no link to the project? Oops!

It's fine for if you are making payments in person.

If you have your own lightning node, Zeus can connect to that, and you can receive without the app open.

But Zeus's real strengths are that

1. it doesn't need any other infrastructure and therefore

2. you don't depend on anyone else to move your money

Maybe Zeus users will have some hosted wallet (coinos, minibits, etc.) to receive money and if it gets too much money in it, they'll move ot over to Zeus. Get the best of both worlds and mininize risk.

Think we'll see the #USD drop below 1000 #sats before the end of the year? #bitcoin #price

Update: nostr:nprofile1qqsrf5h4ya83jk8u6t9jgc76h6kalz3plp9vusjpm2ygqgalqhxgp9gpz4mhxue69uhk2er9dchxummnw3ezumrpdejqzyrhwden5te0dehhxarj9ekxzmnyqyt8wumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnwdaehgu3wvfskueq555fk2 seems to be working for me now, at least for sub 1K values. 🎉

Their suggestions from the other day didn't help at the time, and I still have 10,000+ zombie channels, but it's working now so 🤷.

I'm just glad I didn't have to close channels to get my money back.

I saw minibits suggested. I'm trying out coinos. Now sure what else is out there for receiving zaps.

Zeus is another option for sending, but I've had problems with that lately. When it works, you can receive as long as you have the app open at the time someone's trying to send to you.

It'd be nice if they accurately described what the hold was. I tried 95% and it failed saying I have to have 1% reserved for fees. 🙄

Now that I'm down to 10 sats, I can send out a single sat. One of us doesn't know what 1% means.

Is there no service that is just run by a bunch of cypherpunks?

I wanted to believe. They spent so much time helping out people on nostr when they had trouble, keeping servers online, building self-custody solutions.

I thought they were a group of cool cats, doing what they loved, building the technology of future. I didn't think they'd pivot to acting like a VC firm.

And when you try to transfer 99% of your wallet, or even less than that, it also fails saying you need to keep 1% around for fees.

Way to burn the reputation you've been earning over the years. I'm sad so see things go down this way.

I see #Alby is trying to force people into paying for hosting for Ably Hub by cutting off their hosted wallet service.

Understandable. They have nothing to lose by throwing everyone under the bus. It's not like they'll lose any money over it (their hosted service was free).

I mean, what are the users going to do? Get mad that they can't use a free service anymore? Complain about it on social media? Doesn't matter to Alby's bottom line.

Did nobody mirror the repo on GitLab? I figured that was standard operating procedure at this point for anyone who is using Microsoft GitHub.

Let's try something stupid, but possibly very effective! 😁

I'll report back if I have any fingers left. 😎
