I think we need a new word or phrase. Identity carries a lot of meaning and is as confusing as account that isn’t actually an account of anything. Technically I’d call it a certificate. But in practice we call analogous certificates all kinds of things, like a card or a licence or a number (real clever that). Those are mostly issued by some authority and self-issued on nostr (and btc), but in essence hold a private key for some predetermined purpose. I’d like to convey that, if at all possible.

You can clean almost anything in your house using citric acid, baking soda, vinegar or medical alcohol, which are all edible. It seems that last part is often ignored and I find it crucial.

I think materials science, biology and chemistry all hit the same wall. We have a problem in understanding particle physics. It’s not obvious when this is, but progress won’t be a simple function of available compute although everyone seems a little drunk on it right now.

A social graph built on contextual proximity based on the Attention is all you need model, like L2, so you can ask it who shares your interests or who is a central node on some topic

I’m honestly reluctant to drag my team along, although I can’t seem to stay away myself. I’d basically be asking for a favor. Again. It won’t do them any good IRL, and the possibility that they get compensated seems minuscule. All the risk and work required of them personally, but no balance.

The trivially obvious part is done quickly, but the less obvious stuff takes time to figure out or you’re just making yet another carbon copy. That doesn’t count as a specialty client in my view. I may be biased in my own way, spending too much time on large codebases.

Web of Trust feels a lot like Proof of Stake 🧐

Trust is like social capital: the more trusted you are, the more influence you have, which can leave new users stuck in the shadows. Their less trusted (but often valuable!) opinions barely get noticed.

Trust works as a resource—it’s built and extended through explicit endorsements (like Alice following Bob). But here’s the catch: the early adopters hold all the cards. If you weren’t here first, your influence depends on whether the big players decide to trust you. And trust? It’s scarce, especially the kind that matters most—follows from users with high social capital. These endorsements aren’t handed out easily.

The system has a built-in centralization problem 😬. Popular users with a ton of followers tend to grow their influence exponentially, while newcomers struggle to get noticed. People are incentivized to follow others they trust to protect their reputation, which just makes the rich get richer in terms of trust.

And let’s talk about power imbalance 🔥. A follow from Alice, who’s been on Nostr for two years and climbed her way to the top, is a big deal. Compare that to a follow from Charlie, who just signed up and posted a humble #introduction . Alice’s social capital makes her endorsement hit way harder 🥊.

To top it off, there’s some “pre-mining” going on. New users often automatically follow certain developers, making them super-trusted by default. It’s like trust farming for the OGs, giving them a massive head start over everyone else.

I think we should be thinking about using the ‘Attention is all you need’ principles and looking for contextual closeness instead of trying to encode reputation as a mathematical construct of follows and interactions.

The signing part is obvious, but posting to public relays is basically shouting in a public forum. You can always claim your content, but others can claim it as well. I am wondering if we all assume similar things or do we differ in our expectations? For instance, copying content is 0 cost. We might agree that impersonation is unwelcome and discouraged or not. Do users, clients or relays care? If we have a licence tag on a post, does it mean anything in practice?

Delegation proofs are not required. If you sign an event with a subkey and include the master pubkey and derivation path in tags, the relationship can be checked directly.

Also, consider agreggating all currently active subkeys and their permissions in one replaceable event that can only be signed by the master keys.

Do you have particular pain points or a wish list?

You don't understand how insidious open-borders propaganda is, until you realize that _it's an attempt to remove all differentiating traits from humans_. They call this "strengthening individuality by removing nationality" (hello, newspeak), but what makes humans individual is their particular collection of traits, and nationality (and ethnicity, religion, etc. -- nationality is just the first domino they want to topple) is one of those.

![Newspeak]()

Humans are not blank slates. Like DNA or physiognomy, our personalities are differing jumbles of cultural "letters". Each person selects consciously and subconsciously from amongst these letters, adding to or rejecting them, amplifying or suppressing them, twisting or combining them, building on top of them... and that's what makes you into You.

Open borders is an attempt to reduce the number of cultural letters you can build your "You" out of. If you take away the word "German", I am not liberated. There is simply one less adjective, with which I can describe myself. You have merely eradicated information, crippled language, and reduced my choices. I can then no longer define myself according to "German things", but I can also no longer define myself in opposition to German things.

## Enter the Borg

We are easier to control and brainwash and persecute, if we are centralized and homogenized. As if the entire world were one, big prison and we were all forced to undergo the same education, wear the same clothes, follow the same rules, eat the same foods, enjoy the same entertainment, live the same lifestyle, share the same diseases and cures, enjoy the same lockdowns, join in the same cancel culture, fight the same wars.

That is what globalization brings. That is the end game of Open Borders:

* No more cultural evolution or revolution.

* Genes, but no memes.

* You can go everywhere, but everywhere is the same, so you just stay home.

* You can meet people from all over, but they are all the same, so you just don't bother.

* One mass of humanity, that can be easily molded and manipulated.

I have two items. I want to be able to complete the ashtanga yoga primary series and I want to earn sats instead of buying them.

To get there, I do as much yoga as I can, which is currently not that much due to past health issues, but still, and I’m building a special purpose nostr web client.

### Project Name

Nostr

### Project Description

Nostr (Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays) is an open, censorship-resistant, and decentralized communication protocol designed for simplicity and resilience. Unlike traditional platforms, Nostr doesn’t rely on centralized servers. It already supports various use cases with free, open-source clients—offering alternatives to platforms like Twitter/X, Meetup.com, Excel 365, healthcare system and more. We will help you get started with Nostr.

Nostr has seen remarkable adoption and growth within the open-source community, evidenced by over 12,500 GitHub stars, 500+ forks, and contributions from more than 350 developers. The protocol has catalyzed the creation of an impressive ecosystem of over 390 projects, including mobile and web clients, relays, tools, and services that further enhance Nostr’s functionality. With over 70 tools and 48 libraries, developers can integrate Nostr into a wide array of applications—ranging from chat platforms to file storage and even decentralized marketplaces. These resources help to build decentralized, censorship-resistant systems without the need for centralized servers. Whether you’re working on peer-to-peer markets, privacy-focused messaging apps, or decentralized social media, Nostr’s ecosystem offers the tools.

### Why do you want to be at FOSDEM?

We want to be at FOSDEM because it’s the perfect place to connect with like-minded developers and open-source enthusiasts who share our passion for decentralization, innovation, and building open permissionless technologies. FOSDEM fosters collaboration and the growth of community-driven projects and Nostr is a natural fit as a real grassroots project with its open protocol and commitment to build communication technology with resilience and simplicity in mind.

By being at FOSDEM, we aim to raise awareness, share knowledge and inspire others to explore the potential of decentralized communication systems. We also want to engage with the FOSS community and gain feedback to help Nostr grow. If people are really interested in how they can use Nostr we will show the possibilities, demo existing clients and provide in-depth explanations of how the protocol can replace the social layer (with user accounts in living a database) in existing software.

### What is the relation between the project and the primary contact?

Jurjen works with the community to promote its development, onboard new developers, and contribute to its open-source ecosystem. My role includes helping to raise awareness of Nostr's potential, organizing events, and supporting adoption by providing educational resources and technical guidance.

### What is the relation between the project and the secondary contact?

Sebastian (37) is an independent creative / fullstack web developer who is the maintainer of a PHP helper library supported by OpenSats. Besides this project he is also making contributions with developing Nostr modules for Drupal.

_“Since I've been online on the internet (1998), I'm highly interested in online communities, social networking and new ways of digital interactions. The internet has changed radically in the last decade and that change is not serving our interests. It's fair to say the web is broken in many ways. With Nostr we can fix this.”_

### Anything else you like to add?

We’d also like to highlight that Nostr was created by Fiatjaf, an anonymous founder, which aligns with its principles of openness and decentralization. As an open protocol, Nostr is designed to evolve and find its own way, just like the foundational protocols of the internet. Importantly, Nostr is not a blockchain project—there are no tokens, no costs, and no barriers. It’s also not a platform nor a NFT. It’s purely decentralized, built for resilience and simplicity. While payment solutions like Bitcoin can be integrated, they are optional, not intrinsic to the protocol. This makes Nostr accessible and flexible, truly embodying the spirit of the open internet.

Nostr is more than just a technological protocol; it’s about the energy, problem-solving, and sense of hope that draws people in. Even newcomers can play a significant role in the ecosystem, gaining insight from the outside while discovering the protocol’s potential. Tanja, for example, isn’t from a tech background, yet after just three months, she’s taken on a major organizational role. She’s been spreading the message of freedom of speech and is leading the Nostr Booth LATAM tour, where volunteers, entrepreneurs, and Nostr-based businesses come together, supported by the entire community, to raise awareness about Nostr. Her passion for decentralization and open collaboration also drives her efforts to bring Nostr to FOSDEM, where she will help connect the project with like-minded developers and open-source advocates.

Please reach out to us if there are any questions. We’re really looking forward to presenting Nostr as a protocol at one of the best places where free and open-source software is flourishing.

This content will be used for a FOSDEM stand submission via [https://pretalx.fosdem.org/fosdem-2025-call-for-stands/](https://pretalx.fosdem.org/fosdem-2025-call-for-stands/)

You have a minor mistake at the end of the why section: accounts living in…

Good luck

I keep coming back to reputation as well. It just seems fragile. Maybe it’s supposed to be.

I also think it’s better to post into a public void and be aware that you are basically giving the words away, than posting on centralized platforms, where there are miles of legal text of what will and won’t be done with your content which is then changed on a whim anyway. I just think we haven’t quite wrapped our heads around the fact that nostr is in fact a public square.
