It's too client-specific for this to be true. Snort on web and Amethyst on android for example have no reason to implement this behavior if they prefer not to.

Not to go all "slippery slope" but we already have paid relays and those have their benefits and (ideally) contribute to people who deserve compensation for their efforts.
I don't really see why this should be treated any differently, maybe with the ability for clients to opt in or not receive these types of notes for those users not interested
Personally I think Nostr is a really cool blockchain project.
There are also other cool projects on other blockchains.
But perhaps I will one day be as wise as you and cut my ties with those projects 😄
