I don't think there's a generic way to say how. natural selection is a sort of gardener we can't escape. bottom up, you are on target, cultivate your own inner gardens. top down.. keep your options open. choose technologies that you control, avoid unnecessary dependencies.

turns out I was missing the appropriate directives to proxy websockets correctly. https://www.nginx.com/blog/websocket-nginx/ I was missing the proxy header and http version lines
