Definitely sounds like you were/are.

I have a Pinterest account as well, but it's another form of digital I have never embraced. Fine, I'm a Luddite. Whatever.

Hope is not a wish. It’s not magical thinking or an impossible dream. Hope is optimism that a positive outcome is possible regardless of the circumstances. I’m a cynic by nature, skeptical of human endeavors over our historical penchant for evil, but a fervent romantic, and a sucker for the resilience of the human spirit. Hope is my faith, as it is also my delusion.

That last part made me cackle because I'm guilty of the same. I have this huge folder of recipes I've ripped/cut out. My daughter said, "So, basically, you're making a recipe magazine?" Well, yeah!

My books, however (all 1500+), are pristine. I haven't been able to get into the digital versions, despite the Kindle and iPads.

nostr:npub1ynnetv6xr5df9szyqfdqxhyh79ppjf7vdhddqc30ervn23unt2lq2gnjqd I’m sure she had visions of being found in a dumpster somewhere with ink stains on her fingers. But then I snapped out of it. I guess I was in love.

BTW, a magazine of recipes is Pinterest for us now.

Saturday Evening Post, Architechural Digest, Look, LIFE, Nat'l Geo, Collier's, Harper's ... all part of my growing-up years. Today, I tend to enjoy cooking/dining mags: Bon Appetit, Food & Wine, Cook's Illustrated. One of the ones I subscribed to went all digital and I just said bye-bye.

nostr:npub1ynnetv6xr5df9szyqfdqxhyh79ppjf7vdhddqc30ervn23unt2lq2gnjqd I went digital years ago. As much as I like tactile paper, the iPad is just too convenient. I like to highlight, also copy and paste quotes. I treat physical books like they’re going to be resold in an hour as brand new. You can’t even tell I read them.

My wife on the other hand will dog ear books. Makes me crazy. When we first met, she was at my apt, reading one of my magazines and ripped out a recipe she liked. I looked at her and I think she worried she might not make it out alive.

Goddamn I miss magazines. Digital killed the magazine. Everyone thinks they can curate their lives themselves, even though almost no one has any taste.

You want to read a lot of negativity. Write an optimistic article about politics in America, and wait for the comments. The irony is it’s often a lot of people who either can’t vote or won’t vote. Foreigners and anarchists.

nostr:npub1xpcqmx422lf6cm6nzup53vfsfvyz7pjfarwdklj3apxaggjtdqmqg03t05 very nicely done, reminds me of a high key version of Edward Weston peppers, I a way.

Totally understand the feeling of "too many moving parts" just to make the art you want to make. It can really test your resolve.

nostr:npub10azuycktpr4tpzk95l58lf4tafgu2u2d2sqq4xj3wkgj7fj9a0ws39epta I know the peppers. I did a whole series of what I called landscape nudes or abstract nudes. Both low key and high key.

One of the nice things about shooting fashion was that I worked with a lot of young women and that taught me a lot about their lives. Photographers, like hairdressers, hear everything. It was very eye opening.

It made me a much better photographer. It became part modeling/part therapy. They’d spill their guts and I’d listen and ask questions.

I don’t think I necessarily got tired of taking pictures, I just got tired of wrangling people. Too much trouble. I was working way too hard for not enough money.

This is from a series I did of high key nudes. I liked them.

I never drink water, but I drink plenty of liquids. I’m not dehydrated. Y’all are out of your minds with the O2 thing. Chill with the water bottles.

I hate to admit it, but it’s true. At the same time, it was literally the least they could do. https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/08/04/trump-indictment-jan-6-republicans-saved-democracy/

nostr:npub1xpcqmx422lf6cm6nzup53vfsfvyz7pjfarwdklj3apxaggjtdqmqg03t05 Wow, what a wonderful treat. I've never gotten a chance to see him live. I would love to do so, especially with the Large Band.

I haven't listened to Joshua Judges Ruth in a while. I like it, but it's such a sad album. Probably should revisit it.

nostr:npub17a0kw4g9nta6khd0jdspmgduhnmftv2tgyk309h883sme2rh5tgsr9a55c I like all his melancholy stuff. He’s very funny and is quite entertaining live.

I was trying to get him to let me take his portrait for about a year. He just doesn’t like having his picture taken. He’s a bit funny about it.

Instead he invited us to hang out at the Phila Folk Festival. We loitered backstage all day, drinking beer. Met all sorts of people, members of his band including Luke Bulla (violinist). It was nice.

nostr:npub1xpcqmx422lf6cm6nzup53vfsfvyz7pjfarwdklj3apxaggjtdqmqg03t05 I love that song and that whole album. I’m man enough to admit it that I can still cry a beer scented tear if I hear "If I Had a Boat.”

nostr:npub17a0kw4g9nta6khd0jdspmgduhnmftv2tgyk309h883sme2rh5tgsr9a55c “If I Had A Boat” might be the first song I heard of his. Certainly one of the early ones for me.

nostr:npub17a0kw4g9nta6khd0jdspmgduhnmftv2tgyk309h883sme2rh5tgsr9a55c I’ve been listening to him all morning. Currently listening to “I Love Everybody.” Next on the list is “Joshua Judges Ruth.”

I’ve been his guest at a few shows. He’s always been very nice to me and my wife. He used to actively follow me on Instagram when I shot regularly. He’s an amateur photographer. He likes to talk about gear.

nostr:npub1xpcqmx422lf6cm6nzup53vfsfvyz7pjfarwdklj3apxaggjtdqmqg03t05 Wow, glad I went classy at my wedding:

She don't like her eggs all runny

She thinks crossin' her legs is funny

She looks down her nose at money

She gets it on like the Easter Bunny

She's my baby, I'm her honey

I'm never gonna let her go

He ain't got laid in a month of Sundays

I caught him once and he was sniffin' my undies

He ain't too sharp but he gets things done

Drinks his beer like it's oxygen

—John Prine, "In Spite of Ourselves”

nostr:npub17a0kw4g9nta6khd0jdspmgduhnmftv2tgyk309h883sme2rh5tgsr9a55c Another great one. Love John Prine.

After we were pronounced man and wife, we played, “She’s No Lady.”

She hates my mama

She hates my daddy too

She loves to tell me

She hates the things I do

She loves to lie beside me

Almost every night

She's no lady she's my wife

The preacher asked her

And she said I do

The preacher asked me

And she said yes he does too

And the preacher said

I pronounce you 99 to life

Son she's no lady she's your wife

Said I don't like hippies

And I don't like cornbread

And I don't like much

But that's okay

Fat babies have no pride

And that's okay

Who needs pride

I like you

Cause you like me

And you don't like much

And that's okay

Cause fat babies have no pride

Fat babies have no pride

And that's okay

Who needs pride

— Lyle Lovett, “Fat Babies”

(I played this at our wedding.)
