I'm not convinced that will happen. I have some lingering foot issues that are not fixable, to my knowledge. I think I will always need some kind of footwear for at least a layer of protection for when I hike over rocky terrain. Plus, I'm not going barefoot in the winter. 😁

I haven't missed any days. I've just been disgusted by the feeling of having to do the #kettlebell swings. And yet I do them... 😠

I've also been walking more, from 2.75 to 3.65 miles. Not every day, but, more. My walking shoes are getting uncomfortable as my forefeet are getting wider, which really, really sucks since they were already too wide for most shoes. Blech.

What aspects do you enjoy most about your favorite sci fi or fantasy novels? Obviously it’s a mix of everything but what consistent themes do you find yourself returning to frequently?

To give an example, I tend to like complex and internally consistent magic systems or “hard magic” systems, eg Brandon Sanderson. He basically invents an alternative physics in a given series and there’s a whole set of stories around that.

I also put a lot of weight on complex characters, eg Game of Thrones. You know it’s good writing when someone can push a kid out of a window in the first episode and then somehow kind of make you almost like the guy later on.

If you don’t like sci fi and/or fantasy, what is it about the genre(s) that you dislike? And do you like one but not the other, or both or neither?

Reading in Genesis this evening. Specifically Genesis 34. The story of Dinah, Simeon and Levi. An interesting read for anyone that hasn't read it.

The popular reading of this story is that Dinah was raped, though the text does not explicitly state.

In fact, it states:

2 ...[Shechem] saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.

3 And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel...

I think the idea of rape comes from the word defilement, but there is no indication of force. Nonetheless, Simeon and Levi take revenge by negotiating a marriage with terms of circumcision. Three days after and when the men were "sore", Levi and Simeon descended upon them and slaughtered every male. They then took the cattle, women and children as spoils of war.

I'm curious what the opinions are of this story.

I would imagine that few would consider Simeon and Levi's response as measured or just but I find no real consequences either.

This seems out of character in any context of the scriptures and yet, there's a part of me that can sympathize with their wrath.

It's also interesting that with all Jacob has seen God do, he is fearful of the opinions of men. Another item of note is that this is one of the few chapters that God is not spoken of once.

Perhaps the lack of God at this point is representative of a departure from faith which invites excess and fear?

Super interested to hear what others make of this story. Would especially love the Jewish perspective on this story, as well.

It is very weird that we are getting back to 1970s price of airplane tickets - but not for any kind of premium service. The dropping of price of air travel was one of the nice things of technological progress, interconnecting the world.

On second thought though, the price has really fell down, it's just fiat value that is taking. Don't get confused by Monday illusions (Cc:@JurajKarpis )
