Yeah, Ubuntu was pretty good for awhile and pushed things forward. I can't remember the specific change, but I ended up wanting to make far too many changes from the default I switched backed to Debian and closer distros for most installs.

Haven’t been noteworthy in half a decade. Don’t get me wrong, they make really good products, but the industry is ossifying a bit. We’re probably still a ways away from any step function improvements.

We blocked a lot of spam from our db at some point, that's why we have less pubkeys and notes counted. Same for total zaps - we ignore self-zaps and some big obviously-fake zaps. We also treat 'users' more strictly (a pubkey with a profile, published post, and at least 1 followed person). These should account for most of the differences.
