I want to share two stories that have been my mind. First thing I want to preface is that I live in a small town in Kansas. The county population is somewhere around 5K, in the actual town maybe 3K. Several small towns surrounding us have maybe 1K at the most. Mostly white, agro business. My wife and I moved out here from Denver around 15 years ago. Was definitely and adjustment and at times I would give almost anything to live back in the city, but we have good jobs out here (she is an RN and I am an RT) and ultimately this was the best environment for us to raise our kids in. We are happy and we live good lives out here in the middle of nowhere.
Story 1: This was 2020, I know COVID was going on but I can't remember exactly when it was. Must have been around the time of the George Floyd riots because there was talk about ANTIFA making their way across the country to riot, etc. Not all, but there were a certain faction of locals in my town and the towns surrounding who had decided that the best way to combat these oncoming antifa rallies was to form a makeshift militia and patrol out by the interstate. The interstate being the lifeblood of our communities out here and, for the most part, the only way into or out of town. Anyway, I was out at Walmart one evening getting something and I saw this young couple (black man, white woman) and their 2 or 3 kids (I don't remember exactly). They walked into the store and just had this look on their faces that was a mix between pissed off and scared to death. Didn't think much of it, it's Walmart so who knows. Anyway they got a few things and then left the store around the same time that I did. I am walking to my car and I see this group of guys in trucks standing outside of a motor home. I saw the couple walking toward the motor home with their stuff from Walmart. Some things were said between the group of guys and the man. I didn't look antagonistic, but definitely wasn't friendly. The couple got in their motor home and drove off. The guys in their trucks got in and followed behind them. The motor home turned off from walmart onto a highway that goes away from the interstate. My best guess is they were heading to one of the beautiful and secluded lakes that we have out this way. This also happened to be on the way to my house so I was following this makeshift convoy of the motor home and the guys in their trucks. I was close to them until we got to where I needed to turn to go to my house and the motor home was turning in the opposite direction, still followed by the guys in the trucks. At that time a police vehicle was near and as I made the turn to my house I looked in the mirror and saw the police vehicle with the lights on and the motor home pulling over, the guys in their trucks going past the motor home.
A few days later I read a post on facebook from one of the guys in the trucks (or someone who knew him) saying that this make shift group of rag tags had driven antifa out of town. It got a lot of traction, I saw it reposted and liked a bunch of times. People said they were heroes and thanked them for keeping our town safe, because the cops sure weren't doing their jobs. I talked to one of my buddies who is a cop and he said the guy in the mobile home, who was on a vacation with his wife and kids, had called the cops in a panic they were being chased out of town by a group of deranged vigilantes and was afraid for the lives of him and his wife and his kids. His kids were especially scared, said my cop friend.
Story 2: My daughter came home one day and told me that there were two girls in her class that identified as Cats. The rumor going around the Jr High was that they were shitting in a litter box, provided by the school to accommodate them, in a seldomly used girls bathroom. I asked her if she had seen the litterboxes or could confirm this in any way. She had not and could not. I asked her how it worked. Did the girls wear cat attire, did they meow? She hadn't actually seen them, but had heard through the rumor mill that they licked themselves instead of taking showers. I asked her if she had ever even spoken to these girls. She really hadn't. She knew of them but had not spoken directly to them, or had seen anything cat-like out of these two girls other than she did see one of them wearing a cat-ear headband once, but she couldn't remember when exactly she had seen that. I asked her, why do you care if two girls want to pretend to be cats any way? After thinking about it for a bit, she decided that it really didn't matter to her, one way or the other, what these two people wanted to do with their lives. That was the last I heard about this from my daughter.
A year or so later, I still hear this story told from people in our town and in surrounding communities (I travel for work). I've never heard this story told by someone who was not pissed, afraid, or both.
"Did you hear over in [one town over] (its always one town over) there are kids identifying as cats? The school has to provide a litter box for them and have to clean the shit out when they are done. Things are getting scary out there."
