my experience generally stayed the same, with a pretty high quality of signal. it will only get better, towards what tiktok was able to do.

the algorithm isn’t the problem. the problem arises when the algorithm is a black box, can’t be turned off, or can’t be replaced by another one someone else wrote.

being able to choose if an algorithm is used, and which one is used, is key. no one is done this well yet. twitter is the only one that allows a choice in the first place.

I’m just talking about my friend. I’m not saying that people in general there don’t know what bitcoin is, but I’ve visited and stayed in many villages in Togo and I’m pretty sure the amount of people that know what bitcoin is is very small.

i lived in the town where my friend lives for years (that's how i know him), so i know how much things cost there. africa is a huge continent and life varies depending where you are. togo is one of the poorest countries in the world.

I sent some lunch money to my friend's mobile money account in Togo, West Africa using Strike's Send Global. It took a couple days (supposed to only take up to 10 min) to go through, but still pretty crazy that it worked. My friend is pretty poor. I sent him $5 which should be enough to go and buy a few decent meals there. He doesn't know that bitcoin was used to facilitate the tx. Not sure if he even knows what bitcoin is.

Agreed! This is the problem with a lot of these types of statements. Yes milk/dairy contains a small concentration of estrogen, yes dairy may make up a large percentage of estrogens consumed. But unless dairy intake is really excessive I doubt it would have any effect at all. Males do need some estrogen anyway, diet is all about finding the correct balance.

Trading freedom and openness for fear and censorship is a non starterr for me. It is harder to do it from the client in a decentralized way at the moment but it is possible. centralization and attendant temptation / ability to censor is not something that we should be encouraging if we actually want an open internet experience.

this could be as simple as an llm to prechew your feed for you that learns your preferences over time or as heavy as an extensions layer supported by privacy focused DVM's that you can use for heavy lifting if needed.

The point is that there are options that don't give back the decentralization we have fought so hard for.

Not my bag. I dont partake in the kinks. However they have a right to use infrastructure like anyone else. The infrastructure people got waaaay too uppity during late 90s to 2010s. They centralized everything to the server and called it convenience and safety focus.

Now we have a censorable and highly censored www. This is the basic issue that leads me to say. Put the tools on the clients. I dont trust anyone to filter at the infrastructure. They have all proven themselves unworthy of that trust so far. All have said this time is different.

You are absolutely correct. the issue is where the tools reside. User / client side or on infrastructure somewhere. If its on infrastructure then we are recentralizing and creating chokepoints that are very attractive to censorship / authourtarian types.
