I’m excited to see a conversation starting about the limitations of social media when it comes to social change. For far too long we’ve been duped by dopamine like hits into thinking posts have the power to incite change.
Awareness is not enough.
“What makes this a cultural event isn’t that somebody killed a CEO, but that millions of people refused to respond the way they were supposed to respond.”
The response from insurance companies was more security for CEO’s and from elected officials mostly scolding. How dare people not grieve the loss of the powerful. Note the Chief Justice John Roberts reiterated his concern about the threats to the Supreme Court in his 2025 look ahead instead of acknowledging that credibility has been severely degraded under his leadership.

Memes are only the beginning.
The second article is both a critique of how social media has been weaponized by the left for performative politics as well as a guide for how to take small steps forward. The former is a much needed wake up call. The righteous callout culture also sometimes emerges here on Nostr. Mostly between people who are building so it is less toxic, but it may still be unnecessary and distracting.
“We need to have room for disagreement, for trial and error.” Rejecting a know-it-all culture of condemnation, means being honest about the fact that no one has all of the answers. Eman emphasized that “no one knows quite what to do next, because this moment is unprecedented.”

While humans should take responsibility for their use of social media, these articles also illustrate that there’s still a huge opportunity for disruption to social app UI. One I’m excited to tackle in 2025.
Thank you for sharing these
Agreed on the use with caution. Though ultimately I’m all onboard with Strike offering as an option. Someone has to start the trend. The messaging could be misleading to those who have not educated themselves on Bitcoin much yet though — and could get wrecked by a significant bear. nostr:npub1cn4t4cd78nm900qc2hhqte5aa8c9njm6qkfzw95tszufwcwtcnsq7g3vle how would you caution newcomers? Or is the product mostly marketed towards Bitcoiners because who else would even consider living on Bitcoin than someone who is “all in”? I haven’t taken the step towards transacting in bitcoin, but I save almost exclusively in bitcoin.
I think the point nostr:npub164q45vfa8prpl7f63stsl9qm9n22v6julkasjdqxjc8kevchsj0sp42rl3 is making is that nation states accumulating Bitcoin is irrelevant (or perhaps even a distraction) to the most powerful use case of Bitcoin which is P2P transactions. Maintaining grassroots money for the people is what will truly make Bitcoin a world changing technology for all. Personally, I could care less if the US builds a strategic reserve. Thats not why I stand behind Bitcoin. Whose talking about educating ever day folks like you and I? That should be our signal.
Solenoid - Mircea Cărtărescu
Mind bending surrealist adventure through 1970s/80s Romania through the lens of a failed writer/public school educator. Came out in translation 2 years ago and finally getting to it and loving it 200 pages in.
Interested in getting a FairPhone for testing on Android. Does anyone on Nostr have one they use with a Nostr client? https://shop.fairphone.com/fairphone-5
If so do you like it? Do you have any concerns?

Interested in this as well. Wondering if the Nostr/bitcoin space has any experienced users. Interested in the concept of the Murena “de-googled” eOS. Will check in to see if anyone else responds with feedback!
Just started Joshua Cohen’s “Moving Kings”. Anyone in the Nostr verse read? #literary #fiction
There are tons of indie publishers publishing phenomenal fiction, especially in the translated world. Other Press, New Directions, Charco Press, Dorothy Press, Zerogram, and NYRB for a larger “indie”.
Try Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders. Historical in its setting, but completely original in its narrative framework, how the story is told.
My reading has certainly evolved over the years. I’m an avid fiction reader and a lot of my favorite books historically are written by white men - I think a lot of that has to do with what was published historically. I have a penchant for the doorstopper and most of my favorites fall into that category (Pynchon, DFW, Gaddis, Bolaño etc). But that has changed a lot in recent years largely due to the wealth of translated fiction that is available and continuing to be published and more widely available. To answer your question, the primary function that fiction serves (for me) is building empathy towards human experience, and reading translated fiction (by both men and women) is a rich and rewarding way to do that. There is so much good writing out there! I’m interested in “real” characters. A good writer writes what they know and have experienced and doesn’t try to appropriate someone else’s experience, I truly believe we can sense that in writing - does it feel honest and authentic? So I make an effort to read as widely as possible. A bit rambly, but I love reading and talking about fiction so I appreciate the question.
nostr:npub164q45vfa8prpl7f63stsl9qm9n22v6julkasjdqxjc8kevchsj0sp42rl3 posed this question to nostr:npub1xtscya34g58tk0z605fvr788k263gsu6cy9x0mhnm87echrgufzsevkk5s and nostr:npub12qxvc5evxqt3rky25mfskywugalx5vnhppfl32cu903cnwpyu0uqkmq8u9 on today’s (banger) TPB episode:
For users who don’t “need” nostr yet (for its censorship-resistance, etc.), what are some reasons for a user to join this network’s social-media layer? (Paraphrased).
Here’s one… nostr is arguably the only network where you can show up, brand new, no “following” or af spend, and immediately start connecting with real humans about real stuff, and have an actual SOCIAL experience online.
Think about Twitter for a sec. Between the KYC, outrage algorithms, and promoted content, it’s damn near impossible to build a following, never mind a community. Same with the other platforms.
Hop on over to Nostr, drop an #introductions post and our happy #plebchain is at the ready to welcome you, offer technical pointers, and zap you, first thing.
You say hello and strangers literally start asking “hey nice to meet you, can I send you money?”
You show up and people want to be your friend and give you the best money ever discovered 😆
Trigger-happy #zap culture aside, you enter into a thriving social community on day one, where our favorite thing to do is boost your post and help you find other users who share your interests.
One could argue that nostr provides (among other stuff) the ONLY real social media network that a normal person can actually use.
There is no second best.

The most refreshing thing for me has been the lack of ads and promoted content. I still use Instagram, but the experience is degrading quickly. A quick scan through my feed is ~60% stuff I didn’t actively choose to see. Which is nuts.
I (historically) liked having one app for podcasts and music but my home page is now bogged down with podcast suggestions. Apparently because I am a bitcoiner I need a round up of all Joe Rogan and Tucker Carlson’s episodes clogging my home page. With this I tend to agree with you a bit — and would prefer to maybe keep them separate.
Spotify is spamming me with suggested podcasts I have no interest in. What does music streaming look like on Nostr? #asknostr
I read the first two books of Stormlight Archive a few years ago and need to get back to them as I enjoyed them quite a bit. I read a lot of fiction, but don’t often get to fantasy/sci-fi even though I enjoy it when I do.
What’s your favorite Graeber book? I started Debt a few years back and put it down after 100 pages or so, but read Dawn of Everything last year and loved it so I need to revisit. Have Utopia of Rules on my shelf as well.
Something like this would be very valuable. And not that it necessarily needs to be labeled as “progressive” but that the content/topics/speakers are structured such that they reflect the values and interests of “progressive” thought. Okay done with the air quotes lol
Because too many of us aren’t interested in educating with patience and empathy, but like demonstrating how we know stuff you don’t know cuz we are superior ya know
Great episode! I’m all for the progressive bitcoin conference idea. Would love to help here from the Midwest.
