I’m not sure why mine are playing up, I’ve only done about 7k steps the last couple of days, and even when I went to the shops it was a quick dash and foraging in Morrisons for decent veg rather than walk to the greengrocers as I was running late due to strange definitions of “mid-morning”.

Something in my kitchen (or possible living room) is making a very soft beep every minute.
I’d heard it a bit over the last few days, but I assumed it was water dripping in the extract fan outlet. It’s (gasp) actually sunny this morning, which made me pay attention and notice the regularity of it.
It’s not the CO detector or the smoke detector (which I learn in passing appears not to actually be wired to the mains). The only new electrical things in the kitchen in the last year are the new hob (very different kind of beep) and the water meter (no, me neither, but I have stuck my ear up to it and it’s not that).
I suppose the next step is to turn the mains power off, but I need the doorbell for an expected tradesman, so any ideas in the mean time for something that would suddenly start beeping like that?
I think that English speakers (probably mostly US?) who’re into the subject say “you-fo”.

I used to have a friend (well, our horses were stable neighbours) who was horsey and joined the police because she wanted to get into the mounted, she was gutted when she’d done her however-many years to be able to apply for a transfer and got told they’d never accept her.

For the next two hours on platform 2 of Thirsk station there was a mood of old-fashioned solidarity among all 500 or so the passengers of the doomed Azuma. Children played tag on the platform edge while the adults marvelled at the lack of assistance. The LNER staff paced the platform briskly back and forth, trailing customers, trying to pick up enough speed to make questions impossible while not actually breaking into a run. I’ve seen horses do the same thing to stay ahead of flies. Pinned to the lapel of one guard’s waistcoat was a badge: ‘Be kind. I am someone’s daughter.’
At the far end of the platform, the driver had stopped for long enough to collect a circle of passengers. ‘You have three options as I see it,’ she said, ‘and none of them are good. You can hope that this train starts up again, but I can tell you it won’t. You can go over the bridge and catch the next train back north again, or you can get a taxi to York.’ The last option sounded best but it was out. No Thirsk taxi was prepared to take any passenger to York station for love nor money. Someone offered £200 for the 30-minute trip but nothing doing. In 2023 the usual rules of supply and demand are suspended.

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) has confirmed one case of Anthrax disease in a mixed livestock farm in Niger State. This is the first animal case to be reported in Nigeria since the beginning of the West Africa outbreak in Ghana in June 2023. On 13th July 2023, the sudden deaths of livestock in this farm with eight (8) mortality was reported. In addition, the animals who died were observed to have been bleeding from external orifices without blood clotting.
