I want a nostr daemon / client that I can run on my personal server that keeps track of all my posts and makes backups that I can store and move to another relay should I ever want to.

One of the main misunderstandings with NIP 95 is the thinking that relays will save content in base64 in a regular database together with everything else. That is shortsighted.

While that can be true for the early days and small files, in practice relays can easily decompose the JSON event, remove the binary content, save it separately and reassemble it when requested. As long as the signature matches, they can do whatever they want with it.

This is specially true when a relay joins text search indexing (NIP 50) and natural language processing with the text in the file or image/video tagging/summarization capabilities when media.

I am not sure the benefits of a protocol aligned with the needs drastically outweigh the lack of network effects.

Every collaboration-centric software start up designs their own protocols in a similar way you described. Most of them fail, despite the massive capital investments they usually receive.

I think a better idea is to reuse a less-optimized protocol but with large network effects (and hopefully help build those network effects) to avoid being replaced by the next startup with millions in cash laying around.

It's like JavaScript. One of the worst languages ever invented. But one of the most used ones, nevertheless.

What is the best client everyone is using? Looking for good web and Windows clients. Using gossip but it does not render media posts (only shows links). Also UI is clunky. I tried Iris on the web but when I put my private key its didnt transfer my follows. I am so confused with this ecosystem to be honest.
