'This Is My Glasgow' is a photographic project from Colin M. Drysdale, author of 'Glasgow Uncovered: 18 Walks Through its Past, Present and Future' - available from all good bookshops. Unless otherwise stated, all photos are my own.

The Erskine Bridge across the Clyde as seen from Boden Boo Beach at today's low tide.

I always love it when the tide is right to do the morning dog walk along here.

It was the perfect circular economy which gave the old Glasgow Corporation the income to do amazing things for the city which we can now only dream about.

But perhaps Glasgow will have taken more care and retained Glasgow Corporation's records.

Given the system stopped operating in the 1960s, they may well have dumped all the records in the council changes in 1975. I'm still hoping someone somewhere will have a definitive answer.

nostr:npub1vucaxpxepnwxg58f0utzwaqnpqtpykf6zz56n7atfefnr3lzqxrq6px8cc It was a private system rather than a public one, but I guess the council should have an idea of what runs under the streets. Not too sure how I'd access the information, though, but I'll certainly give them a go. πŸ‘πŸ™‚

The water was pressurised in a pumping station at 321 High Street and supplied through thirty miles of pipes below the city's streets.

Glasgow was one of the few cities to have such a high pressure hydraulic system and it operated from the 1890s until 1964.

Can anyone confirm if this is correct? Or provide another explanation?

I've come across a few of these HOP access covers on the streets of Glasgow recently, and I've been struggling to find out what they were for.

My best guess is that they're part of an old hydraulic system which supplied high pressure (HP?) water for running lifts, presses and other machinery.

I'll be doing a walking tour for the New Glasgow Society on the 19th of August. It will focus on Glasgow's amazing architectural sculptures and highlight some of my favourite ones from Glasgow's city centre. The stunning Clyde Navigation Trust building on the Broomielaw in Glasgow. It was designed by J.J. Burnet in a Beaux Art style and was built in two phases, one in the 1880s and the other in the 1900s. The sculptures which adorn it are by Albert Hodge.
